A sculptor puts the finishing touches to a Madame Tussauds wax figure of actor Leonardo DiCaprio, in the Madame Tussauds studio in London.

I did a complete double take when I first saw this photo. I can't believe how life-like they make the wax figures.

A man holds a mushroom measuring 70 cm and weighing 20 kg at a coffee farm in Chiapas, Mexico, on June 21. The mushroom was discovered by researchers of the Colegio de la Frontera Sur.

The way he's leaning gives a sense of this mushroom's weight.

A grey owl holds a white mouse in it's beak at the Zoo in Berlin, Germany, 10 August 2007.

What a cool shot! I love the eyes of the owl, it almost looks like it is guilty of doing something wrong.

Ben Hatchell competes in the Amateur Skateboard Vert during X Games 13 at the Home Depot Center August 3, 2007 in Carson, California.

I really enjoyed the lighting in this photo, it makes it feel very serene to me. A feeling you don't typically get from photos from the X games.

Israeli police clash with Jewish settlers as they evacuate them from a home being occupied August, 07, 2007 in Hebron, West Bank.

I looked at this photo and immediately was drawn to the protester's hand on the face of the policeman. I just couldn't believe it when I saw it.

A gymnast practises during a training session at the Hubei Sports Training center in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei province, August 7, 2007. Some 40 children aged from 6 to 12 live at the center and train 6 hours a day and attend classes. China's future Olympic hopefuls train at dozens of provincial training centers.

Nice composition, nice light, nice quiet moment.

Afghan women, clad in burqas, talk on a loudspeaker during a demonstration in Kabul, Afghanistan, demanding that a tribunal prosecute those suspected in the deaths of people found in mass graves around Afghanistan.

I realized when I saw this picture that having never been to Afghanistan, I'd always assumed people in burqas were silent, because they weren't visible. This picture shattered that preconception.

Afghan children play on an abandoned military tank in the city of Ghazni, southwest of Kabul, August 5, 2007.

Even though the tank is decrepit, it's still disturbing to look at this picture.

A customer inspects the last few packets of salt for sale in a supermarket in Harare, in this July, 2007 file photo. Authorities in neighboring countries are struggling to cope with a sudden upsurge in Zimbabweans crossing borders to shop for basic products as the economic crisis in Zimbabwe bites deeper.

What would you do if you went to your grocery store and it looked like this one?

Villagers run to receive relief packages air dropped for flood victims at Darbhanga district, in the northern Indian state of Bihar, Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007. Torrents of water washed away homes, crops and cows, leaving hungry and frightened villagers perched in treetops or on roofs.

There are a lot of great pictures of flooding in India and Bangladesh. This unusual shot of villagers running for relief supplies has an epic quality. Most good news photos are cropped tight so they can be read quickly in any size; I could study this one for hours.

Palestinian vendors balance watermelons on their heads to attract customers in the West Bank city of Ramallah July 30, 2007. The produce is widely consumed during summer time.

Here's something you can try at the next summer picnic you attend. Do you think the vendor is getting some help with his balancing act?

Bob Cage and his daughter Laisha, 10, reach about 180 feet in the air as they ride the "Human Slingshot Ejection Seat" bungee ride at the Montana State Fair in Great Falls, Mont., Friday, Aug. 3, 2007. The ride features two high strength bungee cords tied to a steel cage which rocket the riders 180 feet straight into the air.

We news photo editors get pretty jaded to the daily flow of disaster photos. This photo of the "Human Slingshot Ejection Seat" ride stopped me in my tracks. Are these things safe? Can these bungee cords break? According to rideaccidents.com, two men were injured in 2006 on this ride at the same fair when one of the cords "shredded like confetti." Kudos to photographer Robin Loznak for capturing the moment.

Inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center perform Michael Jackson's "Thriller" dance as part of their morning exercise routine in Cebu City August 1, 2007.

The expression on this person's face is priceless! I don't think this would ever work in a U.S. prison but supposedly it is part of a very productive rehabilitation program.

A boy tugs on the beard of a Santa Claus from Sweden at the annual Santa Congress at Bakken amusement park north of Copenhagen, Denmark Wednesday July 25, 2007.

    This makes me happy.
