John Sparkman is dwarfed as he looks into a sinkhole near Picher, Okla., Saturday, April 6, 2008. Years of lead and zinc mining has left turned the town into a superfund site with sinkholes, lead-laced mountains of rock, and tainted water.

Yeah, I think living in a town with sinkholes of this size would make me a little nervous.

Myanmar monks pull a fallen tree up following last weekend's deadly cyclone on the outskirts of Yangon, Myanmar, on Saturday May 10, 2008.

This looks like super tough work. I'd love to see what else is around this scene because it kind of leaves me wondering, why go to all of the effort to pull this stump out?

A boy looks at the flooded fields near his destroyed home about 50 km (31 miles) southwest of Kunyangon May 10, 2008. Even if they manage to find food and shelter, the 1.5 million destitute survivors of Myanmar's Cyclone Nargis still face a major risk from infected wounds, chronic diarrhoea and malaria or dengue. There is something about this image that is hopeful to me. I think it's that the tilt of the boy's oversized baseball cap, his long, thin legs and his stance bring to mind illustrations by Norman Rockwell.

An ambulance arrives at the site of a shooting, as people try to help the injured in Beirut, Lebanon, Saturday, May 10, 2008. Unknown gunmen opened fire on a funeral procession Saturday in a Sunni neighborhood of Beirut killing two and wounding six, a day after Shiite gunmen swept through the Lebanese capital's Muslim sector, police said.

The photographer's vantage point allowed him or her to capture the pandemonium after this attack. There is so much to see in this image that I can't take my eyes off of it, despite its utterly depressing content.

Contra Costa County Mosquito and Vector Control District technician Josefa Cabada prepares to release a bag of Gambusia affinis, better known as "Mosquito Fish" into a neglected pool at a foreclosed home May 9, 2008 in Concord, California. As home foreclossures continue to rise, neglected pools in foreclosed homes are becoming breeding grounds for mosquitos which may carry the West Nile virus.

I never thought that the sub-prime mortgage crisis could result in a West Nile virus outbreak. Hmmm . . . I wonder if the "Mosquito Fish" are good eating.

A disabled Shiite gunman roams in the streets of Beirut on May 9, 2008. Hezbollah fighters seized control of rival pro-government strongholds in Beirut as gun battles rocked the Lebanese capital.

How did this man lose his hands? This image provokes more questions than it provides answers.

Detail of an outfit by John Galliano for House of Dior from 2001, on display May 5, 2008 during a preview of "Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy" in The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Designer Giorgio Armani helped sponsor the exhibition which runs from May 7 to September 1, 2008.

Can you say "Coke head?" Wouldn't it be great to be a fashion designer and come up stuff like this?

Paramilitary police for the Beijing Olympic Games take part in a training session at a military base in Shenyang, Liaoning province on May 6, 2008. This unit will be responsible for the security of the Olympic soccer venue in Shenyang during the games.

What are they practicing for during this training exercise? It looks like they might be expecting vampires during the evening events.

A crop duster plane sprays fungicide to protect the 7,000 hectare banana plantation of Tagum Agricultural Development Co. from a destructive leaf virus in the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on April 22, 2008.

I like the scale and colors of this picture.

A cloud of smoke and ashes produced by the eruption of the Chaiten volcano are seen over Chaiten on Tuesday, May 6, 2008, in southern Chile. The eruption blated ash some 20 miles into the sky, forcing authorities to evacuate the area.

This just about made it into 'The Week in Pictures'. I almost can't believe the scale of what I'm seeing here, and that's why I like this picture.

Firefighters pours water on the Main Building of the Our Lady of the Lake University which caught on fire on May 6. The school is an independent Roman Catholic co-educational institution of higher education located in San Antonio, Texas.

Photojournalist William Luther made an incredible picture of this fire.

A greyhound runs in a dandelion meadow in southern Germany on May 2. Whippets like the one depicted can grow up to 50 centimetres and reach top speeds of 65 kilometres per hour.

This is the happiest picture I've seen in a long time. Imagine how it must feel to be this dog at that moment.

The pack of riders cycles during the fourth stage of the Tour de Romandie cycling race in Sierre, Switzerland, May 3, 2008.

Can you imagine crashing on this ride? It looks as though there is a low rock wall along the road, but it certainly isn't tall enough for my taste.

Egyptians harvest wheat near the town of Tanta in Egypt's fertile Delta region, 02 May 2008. Egypt has been affected by increasing unrest in the country over rising food costs. Egypt was once an exporter of wheat but is now one of the world's largest importers of wheat with most of the imports coming from the United States.

I wonder how long it takes to harvest several hundred acres of wheat this way.

A Chinese man walks by mannequins amongst the rubble of demolished shops in Beijing Saturday, May 3, 2008. Large swathes of the city are being demolished, to be replaced by modern commercial and residential complexes as the city modernizes in preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games.

The sum of the parts of this picture creeps me out: the broken bodies of the mannequins, the eerie quality of the light and the seemingly shadowy figure passing through the scene.

Track personnel try to hold down Eight Belles after the 134th Kentucky Derby Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. Eight Belles was euthanized after breaking both front ankles following a second-place finish in the Kentucky Derby.

Thoroughbreds are born to run and love it. But images like this break my heart and remind me that for as powerful and majestic as racehorses are, they are incredibly fragile. One wrong step can result in tragedy when 1200 pounds is traveling at 40mph on ankles that are about the size of a human wrist. Pumps from an old Mobil station show the price of gas as it was in the 1960's in Newbury, N.H., Wednesday, April 30, 2008. Retail gas prices extended their foray into record territory, rising to a national average of nearly $3.62 a gallon.

A sight for sore eyes: the old Mobilgas Pegasus logo is so much classier than the current Mobil branding. And it's pretty easy to be nostalgic about those prices!

A 'Guerrilla Gardener' unloads flowers from a car before planting them on a spot of urban wasteland in south London April 22, 2008. The 'Guerrilla Garderners' work under the cover of night, armed with seed bombs, chemical weapons and pitchforks. Their tactics are anarchistic, their attitude revolutionary. Their aim: to beautify.

I love it..."Guerilla Gardeners!" When I first saw this photo, I thought it was really intriguing and wondered why this person had flowers in his trunk. The thought of people running around making empty ugly places pretty with flowers is a really cool gesture.

Runners cast shadows at the Vienna City Marathon 2008, Austria, Vienna, 27 April 2008.

Came across this frame while doing my weekly TWIP pre-edits. A very creative way to illustrating the race.
