Two kids play during Mud Day sponsored by the Wayne County Parks and Recreation in Westland, Mich., Tuesday, July 8. The event allows the children one fun day to frolick in the mud.

Our summer intern saw this picture today and was reminded of some of her childhood experiences on her grandmothers farm. We both like the composition, monochromatic color and the relief sculpture quality of the body shapes.

Paramilitary policemen on assault vehicles take part in an anti-terrorism drill in Jinan, Shandong province July 2, 2008. China will have nearly 100,000 commandos, police and members of the military on standby up to and during the Beijing Olympics to handle potential terrorist attacks, state media reported. Picture taken July 2.

We considered this image for The Week in Pictures, but we decided the image was more interesting in topic than compelling in its photography. There were a couple of chuckles as we wondered how tough these police would appear to an attacker.

A Chinese miner rides on the carriages full of iron ores collected from the illegal iron mines in Fanchang, eastern China's Anhui province on June 25, 2008. A global spike in the price of iron ore has pushed China into resuming the search for domestic deposits after a 10-year break, and while China has abundant reserves of iron -- 60 billion tons have already been discovered -- high-grade ore was still relatively scarce.

This man's commute is unlike most of the ones I see here in America. I like his nonchalant pose and attempt at comfort by bringing along a pile of straw to sit on as he cruises through a tunnel of green.

July 5, 2008 -- A woman begs for money as she cares for her sick son in Kabul, Afghanistan, on June 1, 2008. Refugees and internally displaced civilians, left homeless by decades of war, have created a beggar society in Kabul, with the sick and disabled desperate for food and work.

It seems as though once a person becomes a parent, pictures like this have a much different and deeper impact than they once might have.

Winner Dara Torres, right, hugs second place finisher Natalie Coughlin after the final of the 100 meter freestyle during the U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials on July 4, 2008 at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

Dara Torres is 41, and she qualified for her fifth Olympic games yesterday in a sport that seems to be dominated by college-age athletes. Oh, and she has a young daughter. Where does she find the time?! You go, girl.

New York Yankees left fielder Johnny Damon falls to the field as the ball hit by Boston Red Sox batter Kevin Youkilis stays on top of the wall for a moment before falling back onto the field for a triple. The ball was in Damon's glove but appeared to come out when he hit the wall.

I look at a lot of baseball pictures, and I have never seen a moment quite like this by Ray Stubblebine. There are so many great details: the expression on the kid in the Red Sox jersey; the ball balancing on the fence, and outfielder Johnny Damon head over heels.

A woman with a child on her bicycle navigates through snarled traffic in Beijing's central business district, Tuesday, July 1, 2008. Last year China's capital city registered 1,370 new drivers per day, according to the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau. (AP Photo/Robert F. Bukaty)

The addition of almost 1400 cars a day to a city must certainly be felt by its biking population. I've read that officials are going to pull more than 1.5 million cars from the city's roads during the Olympics to try to improve air quality.

A stall holder selling pig masks stands at his stall at the annual Glastonbury Festival 2008 in Somerset in southwest England June 26, 2008.

This image really caught my eye because it's so ... creepy.

Spanish Crown Prince Felipe (R) and his wife Princess Letizia are pictured at the start of the Euro 2008 championships semi-final football match Russia vs. Spain on June 26, 2008 at Ernst-Happel stadium in Vienna, Austria.

Such an everyday moment for a prince and princess. It's interesting to me that some handler isn't managing every call or text or Google search they might need to make.

U.S. soldiers joke with a snow leopard skin sample during an awareness program at a military base in Kabul May 25, 2008. Afghanistan's snow leopards barely survived three decades of war. Now, the few remaining mountain leopards left in Afghanistan face another threat -- foreigners involved in rebuilding the country. Despite a hunting ban across Afghanistan, snow leopard furs are for sale on military bases and at tourist bazaars. Foreigners have cash to buy the pelts as souvenirs and impoverished Afghans break poaching laws to supply them.

I was surprised to see the U.S. military getting training on this topic. It looks like this soldier is a little surprised by it too. Is there some military training specialist who is saying "I have to teach a class on what?" What a huge job to train soldiers on the many facets of the societies they impact during operations, let alone teaching them how to do the regular job of soldiering.

Belarussians attend confession at a Catholic church during the annual Icon of the Mother of God festival in the village of Budslav, about 90 miles north of Minsk, on July 1, 2008.

Several points to note about this picture: I enjoy its segmented composition, I'm intrigued by the numbers on the wall, and I didn't know that confession sometimes takes place in the open.
