Fireworks, marking the fifth day of the Chinese New Year festival which is devoted to wealth, is pictured at a street in down town Shanghai January 29, 2009. Chinese ushered in the Year of the Ox on Sunday, packing temple fairs, entertainment parks, setting off fireworks and firecrackers and hurrying to train and bus stations to get home for the traditional holiday.

This picture stopped me in my tracks while I was looking through images for next week's The Week in Pictures.

Seattle's Space Needle is viewed through water droplets on glass Monday, Jan. 26.

OUR SLIP IS SHOWING: This picture made it into 'The Week in Pictures'. It's an interesting way to see something that people in Seattle see every day. That is part of the daily photojournalists mission, and I commend Mike Urban for doing it well. However, there is a problem. We accidentally ran the picture upside down in our slideshow. Click my link below to see how it originally ran. I like this version not just because it shows reality, but because I can now decode what the big colored blob is in the background.

A woman touches the world on a huge Google Earth screen during the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, January 30, 2009. The overarching theme of the meeting is 'Shaping the Post-Crisis World'.

The wealthy and powerful leaders at the World Economic Forum probably feel like they have "the whole world in their hands." All I know is I want that screen.

Two electronic signs intended to warn motorists of road construction in Austin, Texas were changed by hackers on Monday, Jan. 26, 2009.

This is the first time I've ever seen useful information on this type of sign. A third message said, "Run for cold climates", also extremely useful advice if you're fleeing zombies. Anyone who's read the novel "World War Z" will understand that.

President Obama hands out pens after signing the Lilly Ledbetter Bill for equal pay for equal work with Lilly Ledbetter (left of Obama) Thursday, Jan. 29 in the East Room at the White House.

What year is this? It's amazing that we actually have to enact this law. Aren't some things just obvious? Do you feel that you've been the victim of recent pay discrimination?

A falconer and a hawk pose during a photo call to the trade fair 'Jagd und Hund' ('Hunt and Hound') in Dortmund, Germany, January 29,2009.

I love the color, texture and humor of this shot, but it still makes me very nervous. I know he's the trainer, but a hawk is still a wild animal.

This Suzuki dealership at the Tempe Autoplex in Tempe, AZ is closed. The Kia dealership is too. I spent a few days there last week shooting a video for a business story on the state of auto sales in this sluggish economy. To some parents and their kids, beauty pageants are little more than child's play -- literally. Here is a behind-the-scene image from a children's beauty contest called the Southern Celebrity Beauty Pageant, which was held in Charleston, W. Va.

I feel uncomfortable when I see pictures of child beauty pageants. It seems like the kind of event that belongs in a bygone era. However, it is popular with some people. What do you think about the child beauty pageants? Have you or would you participate?

The moon passes in front of the sun, during a partial solar eclipse, as seen over Manila Bay January 26, 2009.

Solar eclipses always make cool pictures, but it's hard to come up with something we haven't seen before. This shot of the sun at the horizon seems laden with symbolism.

Ice climbers edge their way up an icy face on Frankenstein Cliff in Harts Location, N.H., Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009.

Judging from the size of some of those ice cicles, I'd say this is an activity that definitely warrants a helmet.

A man walks along the Albert Embankment in the rain in central London, on January 22, 2009.

This picture perfectly captures the mood here in London. Low, oppressive clouds, rain and a crumbling economy. A good time to be at the local pub.

Members of the press cover the Inauguration of President Barack Obama from the stand on the Capitol, Jan. 20, 2009.

NBC's Dan Renaldo made this picture of the press corps covering Obama's Inauguration. There were a lot of spectators, but also a lot of press. I heard stories about how cold it was up there and wonder how Obama wasn't cold without gloves or a hat. But then again, he didn't have to be out there for 5 hours like the photographers.

Daniel Albrecht of Switzerland crashes during the third practice downhill session at the 'Streif' in Kitzbuehel, Austria, January 22, 2009.

This is another one of those "bad day at the office" pictures. When you miss a jump on a downhill course, things get ugly in a hurry.

Vertie Hodge, 74, weeps during an Inauguration Day party near Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. in Houston on Tuesday, Jan. 20 just after President Barack Obama delivered his Inaugural speech.

I like everything about this picture. Photojournalist Mayra Beltran did a wonderful job. This combination of technique, art and emotional sensitivity is what makes photojournalism fascinating.

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama walk in the inaugural parade in Washington, D.C. Jan. 20, 2009.

The photographer captured the newly elected President and his wife in a moment looking like they were truly enjoying themselves. How did you enjoy Inauguration day?

Millions watch as President Barack Obama is sworn in as the 44th president of the United States by Chief Justice of the United States John G. Roberts Jr. in Washington, D.C., Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009.

This inauguration image is a perfect example of how a low angle can make such a different photo than the usual telephoto shot. Photographer Chuck Kennedy had to get special permission to place a remote camera at the foot of the president. Indonesian photographer and Obama look-alike Ilham Anas poses after being interviewed by TV stations in Jakarta January 20, 2009. Anas, 34, who from some angles bears a resemblance to the new U.S. president, shot to fame in Jakarta after Obama, 47, won the election in November, and is now earning income as an Obama double.

Is it live or is it memorex?

U.S. President-elect Barack Obama speaks with U.S. Senator John McCain at a bipartisan dinner honoring McCain in Washington, DC on Jan. 19.

It's good to see these guys being civil with each other. It could be easy to carry over bad feelings from the general election. Photographer Jim Young used light very effectively. The way it rakes across the flag, hand and face provides just enough visual information.

MSNBC.com's Photosynth on the Mall in Washington D.C.

We've been using a new tool to display images of the inauguration activities. Microsoft's Photosynth finds commonalities within pictures and stitches those images into an interactive display that allows the viewer to move seamlessly from one image to another. It's kind of a new way of seeing and reporting from the news scene. Our next step is to include your pictures. If you are in Washington D.C. today or tomorrow, photograph what you see and we'll attempt to include your pictures in our Photosynth presentations.

Israeli soldiers play basketball at a school in the southern Israeli town of Sderot. Monday was the first day that high school students in Sderot went back to school since the army incursion into Gaza started over three weeks ago.

I imagine our readers are getting as weary of images of the violence and tragedy in Gaza as we are. So it's nice to see life in the region getting back to something more normal. I sure hope these guys aren't sore losers!

A Palestinian boy wounded during Israel's offensive is carried into Shifa hospital in Gaza January 11, 2009. Israeli forces edged into the Gaza Strip's most populous area on Sunday, killing at least 27 Palestinians in an offensive stepped up in defiance of international calls for a ceasefire.

We see blur motion used in photographs almost daily. But I thought this combination of flash and longer shutter speed created a slightly different and interesting look, especially because the photographer also captured a moment of intense concern and action. What do you think of the technique?

Villagers are pinned down by a bull during an annual bull-taming festival on the outskirts of Madurai town, about 500 km (311 miles) from the southern Indian city of Chennai January 15, 2009. The annual bull-taming festival is celebrated as part of south India's harvest festival of Pongal.

The taming part doesn't seem to be coming along very well for these two.

San Sebastian woke up in the morning completely covered by the snow due the cold snape wich lashes numerous parts of the country, in San Sebastian.

We considered this image for the latest "Week in Pictures." While we appreciated the contrast of the more and less bundled up people pictured, the composition and light in this image weren't enough to beat out the other strong contenders we saw this week.
