Miners work at an underground coal mine in Changzhi, Shanxi province October 10.
Even though it's hard to see, the black on black quality of this image gives me some idea how things look inside a coal mine.

Four-year-old Paige Bennethum holds her father's hand and won't let go as Staff Sgt. Brett Bennethum's Army Reserve unit prepares to deploy to Iraq from Fort Dix, NJ in July. Paige's mother, Abby, took the picture.
I was made aware of this picture when I noticed a Weekend TODAY Show interview with the Bennethums showing up in our most-watched videos list today.

Sean Tucker flies his Oracle Challenger bi-plane inverted over US Marine Corps Major Nathan Miller, flying F/A-18 Blue Angel No. 5, Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, over San Francisco Bay. The U. S. Navys Flight Demonstration Squadron Blue Angels and Tucker are preparing for two airshows this weekend for Fleet Week San Francisco 2009 festivities, which celebrate the area's long Naval history.
This image was considered for The Week in Sports Pictures, but in the end it did not make it because we decided acrobatic flying wasn't really a sport. What do you think? What makes an activity a sport? This has been the subject of numerous discussions I've been involved in over the years, so I'm interested to hear your take.

Energy efficient lighting glows from the solar-powered Virginia Tech house during the 2009 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon near the Washington Monument on the National Mall in Washington, October 10, 2009.
This looks like it would have been a great event to attend. Did any of you located near Washington, D.C., make it out to see the houses?

A 1971 image by Irving Penn of two Moroccan women, "Guedras in the Wind," a platinum-palladium print, flush-mounted on aluminum. Penn, whose photographs revealed a taste for stark simplicity died Wednesday at his Manhattan home. He was 92. "Guedras in the Wind" is scheduled to be auctioned by Christie's in New York on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009.
I saw the Morgan Library's show 'Close Encounters: Irving Penn | Portraits of Artists and Writers' last year and was transported. Penn's remarkable images are striking on monitors and magazine pages. The vintage prints in the exhibition were absolutely gorgeous. Farewell, sir...

Milk farmers spray fresh milk on riot police during a demonstration outside the European Council headquarters in Brussels October 5, 2009.
Must be a nice change from being pelted with rocks.

Heavy fire races over a ridge top as a fire engine assigned to structure protection makes its way along Lone Pine Canyon road in the San Gabriel mountains around 75 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, early Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009. A wind fanned wildfire that charred 3,500 acres of the San Gabriel Mountains continued to rage Sunday as firefighters worked to prevent flames from advancing toward a mountain resort community.
I'm beginning to think that wildfires will be the number one contributor to the Los Angeles area's poor air quality instead of all of the cars. The region certainly has been hit hard in the last few years.

Fog rises off a lake in Highlands, N.Y., on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009.
It's getting to be the time of year when we see a lot of pretty landscape images, so here's another one for you.

New Englands fall foliage meets with an early snow in Franconia , N.H., Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009.
I am kind of sad that a great summer is officially over. The dusting of snow really adds a dimension to this fall color shot.

This was an exceedingly weird sight last night here in New York.
