A squirrel spreads out in the shade on Friday, July 10, 2009, at Oakdale Park in Salina, Kan. The temperature in Salina was in the mid 90's by the early afternoon.
I've never seen a squirrel reacting to hot weather.

Lightning strikes through storm clouds over Agua volcano in Antigua, 32 km (20 miles) from Guatemala City, July 4, 2009. Agua is one of the 30 volcanoes, spread throughout the countryside, that make up the skyline in Guatemala's tourist destinations.
We considered this image for The Week in Pictures. It's an interesting moment, and the scene had potential to be interesting, but the detail of the cloud and volcano were a little too hard for us to make out.

Labourers remove freshly baked bread from an oven at a bakery in Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos July 6, 2009.
The photographer used light well in this image, and I like the graphic pattern created by the bread in the foreground.

Leonard Ritter's nine-hour standoff with police in Fargo, N.D. ended Wednesday, July 8, when he jumped from a second-story balcony and was tased by police. Ritter, 55, had a standoff with police 15 years ago that led to the creation of a local SWAT team. The most recent standoff started when he allegedly threatened a neighbor with a shotgun.
Fellow editor Jonathan Woods pointed out this image. The man seems to be toppling like a tree rather than collapsing. Also, the dog's posture really completes this picture, displaying the same aggressive alertness as the police.

Workers extract guano at Macabi island in Trujillo, 600 km north of Lima, on June 28, 2009. The Guano of Macabi island is being extracted again after a 10-year rest period. Guano is an organic fertilizer once found in abundance on more than 20 islands off the Peruvian coastline, where the dry climate preserves the droppings of seabirds.
With the exception of harvesting sulphur from volcanoes, this must be smelliest job on earth

Ablimit, 22, Kamal, 18, and Tojt, 30 (left to right), are students at Abdikim cooking school in Kuqa city, Xinjiang. The region, situated along the old Silk Road that crossed China and Central Asia, is unusually rich in terms of genetic variety. Uighur facial characteristics and coloring are roughly associated with half East Asian and half Eurasian. Their ethnic-genetic heritage has been the subject of many specialists.
Many ethnicities overlap in this region of China, where riots have recently made news. There's a link below to more images from Xinjiang

I love heights, but I think this would make me nervous.

(Clockwise from top left) Fans cry as they take part in a memorial event for pop legend Michael Jackson in Hong Kong, Pakistani girls light candles in Hyderabad, Michael Jackson fan RJ Arzaga lifts his son Michael, 6, so he can sign a memorial poster outside Staples Center in Los Angeles and veiled Palestinian women walk past a shop offering posters of Michael Jackson for sale in the West Bank city of Nablus, West Bank.
These photos, and many others I have seen since Michael Jackson died, is real proof of his extensive global reach. Upwards of a billion people are expected to watch his public memorial service. Will you be watching it?

The image of a Spanish fighting bull, that was conceived decades ago as highway billboards to advertise brandy made by a winery, is seen stained with red paint after being vandalized, outside Madrid, Saturday, July 4, 2009. The attack comes days before the start of the San Fermin bull running festival in Pamplona.
This picture fooled me for a minute.

This picture gave me a chuckle.

Now that takes talent.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission sets off fireworks inside of a watermelon to demonstrate the dangers of fireworks and encourage safety on the fourth of July, Tuesday, June 30, 2009, on the Mall in Washington.
The lead up to the 4th of July just wouldn't be the same without exploding fruit. Does this picture encourage you to act responsibly or just buy more firecrackers?

A reveler takes part in a gay pride parade in Guatemala City, Saturday, June 27, 2009.
Most images from this weekend's gay pride parades focused solely on the participants - this image does well to include the spectators.
