Rescuers carry a body bag as they evacuate victims of a Mount Merapi eruption in the village of Cangkringan, Indonesia, Nov. 5. Indonesia's Mount Merapi volcano erupted again on Nov. 4, sending a plume about 6,000 meters high above the mountain.

Mount Merapi traps villagers in 'danger zone'

The images today from the Mount Merapi eruption remind me of the images from Mount St. Helens here in Washington State in 1980. It's hard to communicate the power of the hot gas clouds without showing the graphic results. That's why there's a "graphic content" warning on the second image of today's slideshow update.

An earthquake survivor washes his hands in a bucket, donated by Haiti's Red Cross to control infections, near a damaged helicopter in a provisional camp in downtown Port-au-Prince on Oct.30. The unusually high death rate in Haiti's cholera epidemic is slowing as people become aware of the disease and health experts provide treatment, the World Health Organisation said on Wednesday. The United Nations agency's key aim now is to prevent the disease from spreading south to the capital Port-au-Prince and the camps for homeless survivors of the January 12 earthquake, from the northern department of Artibonite where it is concentrated.

Cincinnati Reds manager Sparky Anderson and catcher Johnny Bench celebrate their victory in the crowded locker room at Fenway Park in Boston, Oct. 23, 1975. The Reds beat the Boston Red Sox in game seven of the World Series.

    Sparky Anderson: 1934 – 2010

Sparky Anderson was baseball to me. He managed the Cincinnati Reds to two World Series championships back when I was just becoming aware of the game. Today’s news was hard to hear.

"Sparky was, by far, the best manager I ever played for," said former Reds star Pete Rose, the game's career hits leader. "He understood people better than anyone I ever met. His players loved him, he loved his players, and he loved the game of baseball. There isn't another person in baseball like Sparky Anderson. He gave his whole life to the game."

The Texas vehicle inspection sticker, left, that D. K Langford says was designed from his copyrighted photograph. Langford is suing the state over the use of his picture.

    Photographer sues Texas

I spoke with David Langford this afternoon. He said that he is sad and embarrassed about this.
“I’m a proud Texan. I love my state, but they put me in this position,” said Langford.

A photographer is suing Texas over roughly 4.5 million vehicle inspection stickers that appear to incorporate, without his authorization, an image of a saddle-toting cowboy he created in 1984.
Plaintiff David K. Langford wants the court to block the Department of Public Safety from further use or issuance of the stickers, the design of which he says is based on his copyrighted photo, “Days End 2.”
The stickers were produced by state prison inmates under a Texas Department of Criminal Justice contract with the DPS. Both agencies, which are named as defendants, declined comment…

This danger mouse met a sticky end when crossing the path of the voracious African bullfrog. These carnivorous amphibians have an aggressive temper, can jump over eleven feet and have tooth like projections called odontoids, which are said to feel like broken glass when the bellicose beasts close their jaws. They are huge predatory frogs that sit and wait for animals to pass by. They are stimulated by movement and will lunge at pretty much anything that comes within range, including this unlucky mouse.
