A Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey elephants gets a watermelon for dessert after a hot dog bun eating contest July 2, 2010 in Coney Island, New York. The three elephants competed against three adult males to see who could eat the most buns. The elephants won, 41 dozen for the elephants and 15 dozen for the men.

Although elephants have no interest in eating people, I'd think it'd be a little intimidating to stick your hands in the mouth of a creature that big.

Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona smokes a Cohiba cigar as he rides a sail boat in waters off Havana on April 8, 2000. Maradona had been in Cuba since January on a rehabilitation program to try to kick the cocaine habit that almost cost him his life at the beginning of the year.

From the archive: At 5'5", Maradona is still larger than life

As Argentina prepares to play Germany, I'm wondering what emotional pyrotechnics may be in store from Argentine soccer coach Diego Maradona. He's always been a character, and he's been true to form in South Africa: His emotional leadership has been an exciting part of the 2010 World Cup.

For many football fans, the moment that comes to mind when Maradona's name comes up is his 1986 "Hand of God" goal against England, described and shown in detail here. I'm far more prone to think of the picture above, which does a great job of encapsulating some of the challenges Maradona has faced off of the pitch, and of the gamewinning 'Goal of the Century' from the same 1986 World Cup match against England, a video clip that sends chills up my spine every time I see it, even if I watch it ten times in quick succession:

While not the most lyrical composition, this image does make me want to hear the performance. I was inspired to post this after reading an earlier entry

A Kashmiri woman lies on a road aided by others after pleading with policemen to release relatives who were detained while allegedly playing cricket in a park during a curfew in Srinagar on July 2, 2010. Indian troops were patrolling empty streets as they enforced a strict curfew in all the major Muslim-majority towns in Kashmir to prevent Friday protests. The restive region has been hit by crippling strikes, demonstrations and curfews after the killing of 11 civilians by Indian police and paramilitary forces since June 11, when a 17-year old student was killed by police as they chased anti-India protesters.

Harrison Wallace of Montgomery, Ala., plays his upright bass on the beach just after dawn in Destin, Fla., Monday, June 28.

    Hearing a picture

Fellow photo editor Jim Seida often comments on pictures you can hear. I bet the scene captured in this frame sounded great.

This picture also reminds me again of how what we've experienced in the past becomes part of what we see and appreciate in pictures. This picture jumped out at me because I once stumbled upon a cello being played in a big archway of a centuries-old courtyard. The mellow sound of the cello was perfect for the time of day, when a muted, pastel sunset was lighting up the old stones. I appreciated the moment of random beauty coming together. I wonder if some beach walkers encountered this bass player and thought the same thing?

A man walks near the spilled crude oil on the shores and in the waters of the Niger Delta swamps of Bodo, a village in the famous Nigerian oil-producing Ogoniland, which hosts the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in Nigeria's Rivers State on June 24, 2010. The region has in recent years experienced an average 300 spills a year, roughly one spill a day, from terminals, pipes and platforms, according to government officials and experts. Sabotage of oil facilities by armed rebels fighting for a fairer share of oil wealth for locals, and theft of crude (popularly known as oil bunkering) in recent years saw spills spiking to new levels.

As bad as the oil gusher is in the Gulf of Mexico, a look at Nigeria shows how it could be worse.
