    NBC News reports: About 150 mourners on Wednesday attended the first funeral service of a victim of last week's Aurora, Colo., theater shootings. Gordon Cowden, 51, a father who was the oldest person killed, was memorialized at Pathways Church in Denver.

    Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan and Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates were among the mourners who walked by a large portrait of Cowden at the entrance to the private service.

    Reuters reports: The 16-month revolt against President Bashar al-Assad has been transformed from an insurgency in remote provinces into a battle for control of the two main cities, Aleppo and the capital, Damascus, where fighting exploded last week.

    Assad's forces have launched massive counter assaults in both cities. They appear to have beaten rebels back from neighborhoods in the capital and are turning towards Aleppo, a commercial hub in the north.

    Dozens are reported dead in Syria where opposition forces are fighting to maintain control of Syria's commercial capital and biggest city. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

    NBC News' Ed Flanagan reports on the reaction to severe weather in Hong Kong and Beijing over recent days:

    Beijing suffered through a 10-hour downpour over the weekend that dumped 6.7 inches of rain in parts of the city and as much as 18 inches in the worst hit parts on the outskirts of Beijing in what is being called the worst flooding to hit the Chinese capital in six decades. 

    The subsequent severe flooding killed at least 37 people in the country's capital and affected nearly two million people, sparking millions of angry messages and complaints on China’s Twitter-like service, Weibo, in recent days.  Users posted countless home videos and pictures of cars struggling through wheel-deep water, waterfalls cascading down into Beijing's subway entrances and cars being swept away by the currents.     By NBC Los Angeles and NBC News wire reports — Protesters broke the windows of least a half-dozen storefronts in Anaheim on Tuesday and five people were arrested in the second major clash between police and demonstrators since an officer shot dead an apparently unarmed man.

    Reuters photographer, Mark Makela wrote in his blog: Witnessing horrific health cases, one after the other, was a heartbreaking experience.

    A 20-year-old had 20 teeth extracted. A mother of two who lost her job due to poor eye sight came for eye care and glasses. A three-year-old had to undergo oral surgery for a root canal and front teeth extraction. These were just a few of the heart-wrenching health cases I observed.

    There was a chronic pattern of poor oral hygiene and due to patients’ extreme dental pain they asked for teeth extraction instead of teeth repair. Continue reading

  • Thousands flee heavy fighting in Congo

    Reuters reports: Congolese rebels and government forces traded heavy weapons fire around two eastern villages on Friday, forcing thousands of civilians to flee towards the provincial capital days ahead of a regional summit due to tackle the rebellion.

    A rebellion launched in April has already forced some 260,000 people to flee their homes. U.N. experts have said neighboring Rwanda is backing the rebels, prompting the United States, a key ally of Kigali's, to cut some military aid.

    A blast leveled a house killing a 12-year-old girl and injuring her parents and two siblings, authorities said.

    According  the Niagara County Undersheriff Michael Filicetti, Sarah Johnson's body was found in the debris at the rear of the Wilson N.Y. home, but her parents and two siblings were blown clear and were found in the front yard.

    All four were being treated at a Buffalo hospital for serious injuries, he said. Officials were still working to determine the cause of the blast.

    An Australian submarine sunk a former U.S. warship with a torpedo attack off Hawaii on Sunday as part of the world's largest international maritime exercise.

    HMAS Farncomb fired a Mark 48 Torpedo into the Kilauea's hull, striking the ship below the bridge. 

    The Kilauea was an ammunition ship commissioned in August 1968, decommissioned and transferred to MSC in October 1980 and deactivated in September 2008.

    The Associated Press reported earlier this month that the Navy was resuming its practice of using old warships for target practice and sinking them in U.S. coastal waters after a nearly two-year moratorium spurred by environmental and cost concerns.

    The ex-USS Kilauea (T-AE-26) was sunk in waters 15,480 feet deep, 63 miles off the coast of Kauai.

  • Congo rebel clashes stoke fears of broader conflict

    The U.S. State Department announced on Sunday that it was cutting military aid to Rwanda following accusations that it had given backing to rebel groups in neighboring eastern Congo, Agence France Presse reported

    More than 200,000 civilians have had to leave their homes and several hundred fighters have been killed in recent clashes between the M23 rebel group and the Congolese government, Reuters reports. Reports of support for rebel fighters from Rwanda have stoked fears of a slide into a broader central African conflict, although countries in the region last week agreed a plan to eradicate armed groups in eastern Congo.
