Pentagon unveils scale model of bin Laden compound

    National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency via AP

A set of images released by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency show a scale model of the compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where Osama bin Laden was killed, The Associated Press reports.

The model was built by the agency and used by military and intelligence leaders to plan the raid. The once-classified model is scaled at 1 inch to 7 feet and each object in the model existed at one time at the original compound.

One year since U.S. commandos flew into this army town and killed Osama bin Laden, Pakistan has tried to close one of the most notorious chapters in its history, The Associated Press reports from Abbottabad. The compound that housed him for six years was razed to the ground, and the wives and children who shared the hideaway were flown to Saudi Arabia just last week.

On May 1, 2011 Abbottabad, a small town in the Hazara region of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan, gained world attention when President Barack Obama announced the words, "Justice has been done," indicating the death of Osama bin Laden.

Reuters photographer Akhtar Soomro travelled to Abbottabad a year after the raid on bin Laden's compound to take pictures of the town and document what had happened to the house where bin Laden was killed.

The compound has now been flattened and has found a new lease of life as a cricket pitch, a source of concrete blocks for any villagers with a big enough hammer, and a tourist site where people have their photo taken.

Residents go about daily life in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad

    By Rich Shulman

It's funny how the popular assumption about Osama bin Laden hiding in a cave turns out to be so far from reality. Abbottabad turns out to be a typical suburb, and its residents had a hard time believing bin Laden really lived there.

Farmer Jalaluddin, 70, carries harvested vegetables past the compound where U.S. Navy SEAL commandos reportedly killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad May 5. Pakistan, in apparent reference to old rival India, said on Thursday any country that tried to raid its territory in the way U.S. forces did to kill Osama bin Laden would face consequences from its military.

I feel sorry for those children, born in that hell-hole. Did they ever hear of a frikin concrete pump? They are still two steps away from the stone age.
