Airbus pulls A380 out of flying display at Paris Air Show

Niek van der Zande / Reuters

The damaged right-hand wing-tip of an Airbus A380, the world's largest jetliner with a wingspan of almost 80 meters, is seen on the tarmac on the eve of the opening of the Paris Air Show in Le Bourget, near Paris, June 19. Airbus said on Sunday it was pulling one of its flagship double-decker A380s out of a flying display at the Paris Air Show, compounding a series of embarrassing hiccups for the EADS unit at this year's big-ticket industry event.

According to Reuters, the damage to the wing occured when the A380 clipped a structure at the airport while performing ground maneuvers. In addition to pulling the A380 from the flying display, Airbus stated earlier that its A400M military transport plane will not perform because of a gearbox problem. Terrified passengers aboard blazing jetliner

SINGAPORE — Terrified passengers aboard a blazing jetliner prayed together before the plane made an emergency landing on Monday. An engine on a Cathay Pacific Airbus A330-300 caught fire in midair.

Passengers on Cathay Pacific flight CX715 prepare to disembark from the aeroplane after it landed safely at Changi Airport in Singapore on May 16. The A330 flight, which was enroute to Jakarta, experienced engine trouble shortly after takeoff and had to return to Singapore. Its right engine was burnt, according to pilot Bradley Chic.

Cathay Pacific said the jet, bound for Jakarta with 136 passengers on board, landed back in Singapore "without incident" just before 2 a.m. It said the crew shut down the engine after receiving a "stall warning." Continue reading.

Looks like everyone made it off safe. What is the problem? What I am saying is, what if it was a bus engine, a taxi cab engine? I know that they were up in the sky, but these planes have (obviously) many built-in safety resorts that allowed all passengers to land and walk off the plane.

Q: Who says commercial air travel is awful these days?

A: Probably not the folks who can afford the $7840 for a first-class round trip flight from Dubai to Manchester.*

An Airbus A380 of German airline Lufthansa rolls over a bridge after it landed at the airport in Schkeuditz near Leipzig in eastern Germany on June 1, 2010. The German national football team will use an A380 when they travel on June 6, 2010 to South Africa to take part in the 2010 Football World Cup.

    Airbus 380 = HUGE

I saw one of these for the first time on Friday, from the window of a 757 on the tarmac at Sea-Tac. It's hard to describe how big this aircraft is, but getting the scale of the cars and roadway in this picture really helps.
