French police, protesters clash at airport site

The Associated Press reports from NOTRE-DAME-DES-LANDES, France — More than 500 riot police, some firing tear gas, are clashing with protesters squatting in a wooded area of western France to oppose the building of a new airport there.

In a muddy, rainy standoff starting early Friday, protesters responded to police attempts to remove them by hurling sticks, stones and gasoline bombs. For two weeks, protesters have illegally occupied the site of the planned Notre-Dame-Des-Landes airport set to start operating in 2017.

Environmentalists and the far-left Green Party complain the airport will mean pollution; supporters insist on its economic benefits. Read the full story.

Swarm of thousands of bees delays Pittsburgh flight

    Stephen Repasky / AP

Thousands of bees swarm on the wing of a Delta Air Lines flight at Pittsburgh International Airport in Pittsburgh. The flight from Pittsburgh to New York was delayed until Repasky, a beekeeper, was called in to remove them.

    Justin Merriman / AP

A beekeeper, gathers up bees that swarmed on the wing of a Delta Air Lines flight.

Master beekeeper Stephen Repasky tells KDKA-TV he was called out on Wednesday when the bees gathered on the wing of the plane as crews were getting ready to fuel the plane.

Repasky says such swarms form when colonies become too large and the queen leaves half of her bees behind to find a new home. Some swarms can contain 25,000 to 30,000 bees.

Interesting. I saw the very same thing several weeks ago on a smaller scale. As an aircraft mechanic I was contacted to investigate a swarm of bees in a Piper Cheyenne (small turboprop) . Ultimately a bee removal expert removed about 3000 bees from around an air inlet duct on the plane, but even 24 …

Crisis averted after landing gear fails on United flight

    Saed Hindash / The Star-Ledger

A United Shuttle Air Express passenger plane with hydraulic problems made an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport Monday evening, forcing the temporary closure of the airport. No injuries were reported.

    The Star-Ledger's Tomas Dinges reports:

As a passenger plane with hydraulic problems was getting ready to make an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport Monday evening, passengers thought they were going to die.

"We were saying our prayers because we just thought it was the end," said Steve Parowski, a passenger from Franklin Lakes. "I sent a text to my sons letting them know that I love them, and I hope everything works out."

Parowski was among the 71 people aboard the United Shuttle Air Express traveling from Atlanta to Newark — a flight that was uneventful until the commuter jet was preparing for landing and its front landing gear failed to deploy, authorities said. Parowski said as soon as he got off the plane and he knew he was fine, he called his sons on the phone and told them "I landed and I'm alive."

Read the the Star-Ledger's full story.
