The sun shines through Martin's Hole, a natural gap just underneath the jagged ridge of Mount Grosses Tschingelhorn (2849 metres/9347 feet) near the eastern Swiss alpine village of Elm on Wednesday. Twice a year, about eight days before the start of spring and again about eight days after the beginning of autumn, the rising sun sends its rays through the 19-meter wide hole in the mountain face before clearing the ridge.

Can't get much of a suntan there .... Lots of trees still seem to be growing well in that picture though .... ?? Indirect sunlight can still provide enough photosynthesis .... There's your proof ....

Skiers enjoy the view of a sea of fog on top of the Weisshorn mountain, at an altitude of 2,653 meters in Arosa, Switzerland on Monday. Heavy snow and a severe cold snap have killed at least 36 people across eastern Europe and many areas were under emergency measures, as schools closed down, roads became impassible and power supplies were cut off.

Tour de France celebrates 100 years of climbing the Alps

    By Rich Shulman

Tomorrow's stage 18 of the Tour de France is a killer that includes two "out of category" climbs and the highest finish elevation in Tour history at 8,678 feet. The New York Times has an excellent story on the rich history of the race in the Alps.

Alpine glacier covered in canvas to prevent summer melting

    Michaela Rehle / Reuters

Workers install canvas covers on the glacier ice on top of Germany's highest mountain, the 2,962 metre (9,718 feet) Zugspitze, near the southern Bavarian resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen on May 10. To keep ski-lift sections safe for the winter season, the glacier ice is protected from melting between May and September.
