Thousands of people holding national flags gather at the mausoleum of Ataturk to celebrate the country's Republic Day in Ankara, Turkey, Oct. 29, 2012.

Reuters reports — Turkish police fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse thousands of secularists protesting at a banned rally in the capital on Monday against what they see as an increasingly authoritarian and Islamist government.

The scenes of chanting men and women draped in Turkish flags and carrying banners portraying the country's founding father Mustafa Kemal Ataturk highlight a longstanding division in Turkish society between staunch secularists on the one hand and more conservative religious Turks on the other. Water canons push back when teachers protest education bill in Turkey

    Umit Bektas / Reuters

Sebahat Tuncel, a Kurdish member of parliament, runs for cover as riot police disperse demonstrators during a protest against a government attempt to railroad a new education bill through parliament in Ankara March 29. Members of teachers' union and opposition supporters gathered in the Turkish capital of Ankara to protest against a government attempt to railroad the new education bill through parliament which secular parties say is designed to promote Islamic schooling. The government wants to overturn a 1997 law imposed with the backing of the military which extended compulsory education from five to eight years, but also stopped under-15s attending religious "imam hatip" schools.

Kurds celebrate ancient Persian festival in Turkey

    Reuters

Demonstrators gather around a bonfire to celebrate Newroz in Ankara, March 21. The Newroz has traditionally been used as an opportunity to highlight separatist demands by Kurdish rebels and police had to intensify security against possible violence as tensions run high ahead of nationwide general elections. Newroz, the Farsi-language word for "new year", is an ancient Persian festival, celebrated on the first day of spring in Central Asian republics, Iraq, Turkey, Afghanistan and Iran.

It's not Persian, it's Iranian, in other words, Aryan. That means both Kurds and Persians share the same festival, witha bunch of other nations from Balkans to India.

Two days of uninterrupted snowfall in the capital, Ankara, plunged the city's traffic into chaos. Major routes were cluttered with vehicles on Tuesday evening, forcing people to walk to their homes, Anatolian News Agency said.

Snow interrupts life in Ankara, while people attempt to scare winter away in Germany

Maybe the people in Ankara should try Germany's solution to late winter snowfall. I'm ready for spring... not more snow!
