Indian anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare begins another hunger strike

Medical personnel checks the condition of Indian anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare on the first day of his hunger strike in Mumbai, India on Tuesday. Activist Anna Hazare started a new hunger strike to demand a stronger law while India's Parliament debates on anti-corruption legislation. Corruption has become a key issue as several big-money scandals hit Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government over the past year. Hazare has been campaigning for a strong anti-graft bill since April 2011 by holding hunger strikes and rallies.

A three-day fast led by 74-year-old activist Hazare and a plan for thousands of people to picket the home of Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi on New Year's Eve will be a test of strength for the anti-corruption movement that forced a government U-turn in the summer.

Supporters of Indian activist Anna Hazare wave the Indian tricolour on the first day of his 3 day-long fast in Mumbai on Tuesday. The 74-year-old former soldier, Hazare, along with volunteers of his India Against Corruption (IAC) organisation embarks on a fresh hunger strike against a proposed new law to tackle endemic graft. At least 40,000 people a day are expected to attend the three-day fast in the city's northern suburbs, organisers said, even though lawmakers are still debating the planned legislation in parliament. The former army driver's latest high-profile protest comes amid question marks over the integrity of his anti-corruption movement, as well as criticism that he is riding roughshod over the democratic process.

Hazare began a three-day hunger strike in Mumbai Tuesday even as the country's Parliament prepared to debate legislation to create an anti-corruption watchdog. Hazare, who claims inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi has called his protest against corruption the second freedom struggle and has fasted three times already to garner support for his demands.

    From the Associated Press:

Hazare, who claims inspiration from Mohandas K. Gandhi, has called his protest against corruption India's second freedom struggle and has fasted three times already to garner support for his demands.

Thousands of people, many waving Indian flags and wearing the trademark white cap made popular by first independence leader Gandhi and now Hazare, gathered in support. As of Tuesday afternoon, the crowd was thinner than the tens of thousands Hazare drew to an August protest in the Indian capital.

Hazare is not without critics who say his populist campaign attempts to vilify all politicians and hold elected officials hostage.

    Reuters reports from NEW DELHI:

A hunger strike by an Indian anti-graft activist entered its seventh day on Monday with opposition parties calling for nationwide rallies this week, leading the embattled government of Premier Manmohan Singh to take tentative steps to open talks.

The 74-year-old Anna Hazare, who has shed five kgs (11 lbs), spent the seventh day of his fast lying down on a makeshift stage on an open ground in the capital as electric fans cooled him in the humid monsoon heat. Continue reading.

For the first time in their 120-year history, Mumbai's legendary tiffin delivery men are to strike, EPA reports.

The dabbawalas, whose elaborate system delivers hundreds of thousands of lunches from workers' homes to their offices each day - reportedly making just one mistake in every six million deliveries - have been studied by Harvard academics and a slew of management consultants, according to The Economist.

An official from the Mumbai Tiffin Box Supplier Association told The Wall Street Journal that deliveries will be halted on Friday in support of Anna Hazare's fight against corruption.

Veteran campaigner Hazare, whose protest has hit a chord with Indians fed up with rampant corruption, has struck a deal with police to hold a 15-day hunger strike and is expected to leave prison on Friday, the AP reported.

It looks like he won't be the only one going hungry.

They pick up the same tiffins from the same houses and take to the same workers in the same locations every day as the drivers deliver along their route? Like mailmen who have 1 package to pick up and deliver. Not a lot of room for error there is there...

The AP reports from NEW DELHI:

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh lashed out at India's most prominent anti-corruption crusader Wednesday, accusing the fasting activist of trying to circumvent democracy by demanding Parliament pass a reform bill he supports.

    Reuters reports from NEW DELHI:

Police arrested India's leading anti-corruption campaigner Tuesday, just hours before he was due to begin a fast to the death, as the beleaguered government cracked down on a self-styled Gandhian activist agitating for a new "freedom" struggle.

At least 400 followers of the 74-year-old Anna Hazare were also detained, signaling a hardline stance from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh against anti-government protests, a gamble that risks a wider backlash against the ruling Congress party.

Dressed in his trademark white shirt, white cap and spectacles in the style of independence leader Mahatma Gandhi, Hazare was driven away in a car by plainclothes police, waving to hundreds of supporters outside his residence in New Delhi. Continue reading.

India activist renews anti-graft fast to pressure government

    By Rich Shulman

Can Anna Hazare really awaken the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi?

    As AP reported:

Decked out in a plain white shirt, white cap and spectacles in the style of Mahatma Gandhi, the septuagenarian Anna Hazare became the unlikely thorn in the side of the Congress party-led coalition when he went on an indefinite hunger strike in April.
