    Runners dash to top of Empire State Building

    Reuters reports — Australians Mark Bourne and Suzy Walsham were the fastest man and woman to race up the 1,576 steps of the Empire State Building on Wednesday in the run up of the iconic New York landmark.

    Bourne finished in 10 minutes, 12 seconds and Walsham clocked 12:05 in the race up 86 floors that is described as a vertical marathon, the New York Road Runner (NYRR), which organizes the annual Empire State Building Run-Up, said.

    About 600 runners from 18 countries took part in the race, now in its 36th year. Read the full story.

    Usain Bolt races to 100m victory in world-leading 9.76 seconds

    The Associated Press reports — "My drive was better and I started well," Usain Bolt said after setting a season's-best time. "The transition was also better. After Ostrava [where he ran a relatively slow 10.04 last week] a lot of people questioned me, but I never questioned myself."

    The fastest runner in the world happens to train with his stiffest competition, who also happens to be his friend and teammate. Usain Bolt of Jamaica will compete against fellow countryman Yohan Blake at the 2012 Olympics in London this summer. NBC's Lester Holt traveled to Bolt's homeland to meet the king of the track.

    The Gaza Strip's first marathon

    Palestinian runner Nader al-Masri, who trained on pot-holed roads and past bombed-out buildings, won the Gaza Strip's first marathon on Thursday.

    Masri, who represented Palestine in the 5,000 meters at the Beijing Olympics, was one of nine runners along the full 42.2-km (26-mile) distance. He completed the course in two hours, 42 minutes, 47 seconds.
