Paper toss! Legislators celebrate at the closing of the session in Atlanta

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports: Two of the most contentious issues of this year's General Assembly passed on the last day of this year's session, salvaged by Republican leaders who wanted to tout them as major victories this election year.

New restrictions on late-term abortions in Georgia, which had appeared dead in the morning, and a bill that would cut unemployment benefits for Georgians, passed with just minutes remaining in the 2012 session.

The work to get them passed highlighted a more-than-14-hour day, one full of compromises that dominated much of lawmakers' work. Full story.

A lone member of the Occupy Atlanta movement is arrested by members of the Atlanta Police Department at Woodruff Park early on Monday, Nov. 7, 2011 in Atlanta. The group was trying to reoccupy the park they had been encamped in for the second night in a row.

Lone Occupy Atlanta protester arrested inside park

    The AP reports:

Atlanta police said one protester draped in an American flag inside Woodruff Park was arrested after refusing to leave by a Sunday night curfew, and four other people on bicycles were arrested near the park — three for traffic violations and one for obstruction of a law enforcement officer.

The 23-year-old woman in the park was warned three times in English and Spanish to leave before she was arrested, police spokesman Carlos Campos said.

At the time, dozens more demonstrators chanting slogans like "We're hungry! We're poor! What are you wasting our money for?" stood behind barricades surrounding the park, where police had warned they would enforce an 11 p.m. curfew.

Occupy Atlanta organizer Tim Franzen said having one person protesting was just as powerful as several. Read the full story.

MLK's historic Ebenezer Baptist Church celebrates sanctuary restoration

    David Goldman / AP

Rev. Cal Murrell reacts during a ceremony on April 15, 2011 to mark the restoration of the sanctuary of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. preached.

Martin Luther King III, the son of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., speaks during the ceremony to mark the restoration of the sanctuary.

Ebenezer Baptist Church’s first pastor was born into slavery. The church was founded in Atlanta, Ga. in 1886 shortly after the Reconstruction Era in the South. The church moved to several locations over the years, but the current sanctuary was completed in 1922.

Ebenezer has had pastors who not only preach the Gospel, but take their ministries into the world and speak on behalf of the oppressed, disenfranchised and underprivileged. It was here, from the pulpit of the Heritage Sanctuary, that the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. preached his ministry of nonviolence.

World's largest concrete pumps fly to Japan

    By Jim Seida

A Putzmeister concrete pumper is loaded onto a Russian Antonov AN-124 cargo airplane at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport on April 8, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Two of the world's largest concrete pumps were loaded onto Russian cargo jets at American airports headed for Japan.  The Putzmeister America pumps have been retrofitted to to pour water on a Japanese nuclear power plant stricken by an earthquake and tsunami.

Erik S. Lesser / AFP - Getty Images

The 95-ton pumper will be delivered to Japan to assist in the cooling down efforts of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

AP says: The 190,000-pound pump designed by Wisconsin-based Putzmeister America Inc. comes mounted on a 26-wheel truck. Its extendable boom can reach more than 200 feet, and can be operated two miles away by remote control, making it possible to shoot water into hard-to-reach places at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant in Japan.

If necessary, the pump could also entomb a damaged nuclear reactor in concrete. After a 1986 disaster, Putzmeister sent 11 pumps to pour concrete over parts of the Chernobyl nuclear plant in Ukraine.

    Nick Ut / AP

Another Putzmeister is loaded onto a Russian Antonov An-124 cargo jet at the Los Angeles International Airport Friday.

Moving such a large pump required hiring a Russian Antonov AN-124 cargo jet, one of the world's largest. After landing in Atlanta, the towering plane taxied to a stop near the truck. The plane's nose lifted, revealing a ramp that extended as if the aircraft had stuck out a green, metal tongue.

Once the ramp was fully constructed, a driver steered the pump truck into the plane.

That pump and another picked up at Los Angeles International Airport are scheduled to depart Saturday. Putzmeister America's parent company in Germany has already sent a smaller pump and plans to send another.

The Japanese utility is picking up the cost of shipping the pumps to the region.
