St. Louis Cardinals take out Atlanta Braves in game marred by fan anger

Pete Kozma and Matt Carpenter of the St. Louis Cardinals run into the dugout as fans throw debris onto the field after an infield fly was called in the eighth inning against a ball hit by Andrelton Simmons of the Atlanta Braves during the National League Wild Card playoff game at Turner Field on October 5, 2012 in Atlanta, Georgia.

AP reports: In the Braves' eighth, with one out, runners on first and second, and the Cardinals leading 6-3, shortstop Andrelton Simmons popped up to shallow left field. Cards shortstop Pete Kozma ran into the outfield to make the play but veered off, apparently thinking the left fielder would make the play. The ball fell between them, but the left field umpire called the batter out on the infield fly rule.

Fans erupted in anger and threw debris on the field, forcing a delay of 18 minutes. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez, played the rest of the game under protest. Read the full story.

Braves clinch playoff spot with walk-off home run

    David Goldman / AP

Fans cheer as Atlanta Braves' Chipper Jones waves to the crowd after the Braves beat the Miami Marlins 4-3 in a baseball game to clinch at least a wild-card berth on Tuesday night.

AP reports: Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to put the Atlanta Braves back in the playoffs with a 4-3 victory over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night.

Freeman's dramatic drive off Mike Dunn clinched at least a National League wild-card berth for the Braves, who squandered a big lead in the wild-card race last year with a huge September collapse.

Longtime star Chipper Jones, who plans to retire at the end of the season, led off the ninth with a double. He moved to third on a wild pitch by Dunn (0-3) and scored when Freeman's 22nd homer easily cleared the center-field wall. "There was never any doubt," Jones said during the clubhouse celebration. "We knew that last year was somewhat of a fluke."  Read the full story.
