Photos, letters among Kennedy memorabilia to go to auction

    Jessica Rinaldi / Reuters

A photo of former U.S. President with his children John Jr. and Caroline in costumes taken on Oct. 31, 1963 is displayed among other items as part of the McInnis Auctioneers Presidential Auction in Amesbury, Mass. Feb. 10, 2013.

The items to be auctioned are part of the estate of David F. Powers, who was a close friend as well as Special Assistant to former President John F. Kennedy. Powers traveled with Kennedy from the beginning of his political career through the president's assassination in 1963. Powers became the first curator of the JFK Library, where he served until he retired from the position in 1994. Powers' family discovered the pieces as they prepared the family home for sale.

Australian mining magnate bows out of 'sport of kings' as fortune shrinks

    Tim Wimborne / Reuters

A potential bidder views a foal at the Magic Millions sales complex on Australia's Gold Coast during an auction of Broodmares from Patinack Farm, the horse racing stud owned by mining magnate Nathan Tinkler, on October 30, 2012.

Martyn Rushby / Handout via Reuters, file

Nathan Tinkler's rise from obscure electrician to mining magnate, sports club owner and champion of a rejuvenated Australian industrial town could be unravelling.

Reuters reports — With a cry of "cheap as old boots" from the auctioneer, the hammer came down at A$5,000 ($5,200) on the first broodmare to open a three-day auction of 350 horses from the stables of faltering mining magnate Nathan Tinkler.

Tinkler's rise from pit electrician to Australia's youngest billionaire has hit a hurdle, with creditors circling his stable of mining, sports and racing businesses, and he is raising funds with the out-of-season sale that began on Tuesday.

His 19.4 percent stake in Australia's biggest independent coal miner Whitehaven Coal, which represents the bulk of his wealth, is heavily leveraged and has shrunk considerably in line with falling coal prices. Read the full story.

Check that bought Superman rights for $130 sells for $160,000

    Reuters

Reuters reports: NEW YORK — Decades after two young cartoonists from Cleveland sold the rights to Superman for $130, their 1938 paycheck fetched $160,000 on Monday in an online auction. The winning bid landed the check that Detective Comics, later known as DC Comics, wrote to Jerome Siegel and Joe Shuster for the comic-book character with the "S" emblazoned on his chest.

The check for the rights to the American icon who stands for truth, justice and the American way is "the holy grail" for comic book fans and collectors, Zurzolo said.

    Heritage Auctions via AP

This undated photo provided by Heritage Auctions shows the front and back of one of the first pennies struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia. This 1793 "Chain Cent" sold for a record $1,380,000 in a public auction conducted by Heritage Auctions at a coin collector's convention in Orlando, Fla. on Jan. 4. The linking rings on the back of the coin were intended to represent the original 13 colonies, but critics claimed the chain was symbolic of slavery and the design was quickly changed with a wreath replacing the chain.

$1 million penny? Take that for your thoughts

    The Orlando Sentinel reports:

That was the final bid by an unknown buyer for the one-cent copper coin minted in 1793, the first year the United States produced its own coins. Its sale was one of the biggest deals at the coin show and annual convention of the Florida United Numismatics at the Orange County Convention Center.

Christie's auction house employees speak on the phone to bidders under pictures of Elizabeth Taylor at Christie's, where hundreds of items once belonging to the iconic actress have gone on the auction block on Dec. 14, 2011 in New York City. Taylor's jewelry collection, much of it given to her by Richard Burton, brought in a record-setting $115 million including more than $11.8 million for a pearl necklace. Sales of Taylor's clothing, art and other memorabilia are currently being held. Part of the proceeds from the auction will go to The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.

$116 million auction of Liz Taylor jewels breaks record

    By Rich Shulman

I really like the way Spencer Platt framed this image.

    Reuters reports:

NEW YORK — An auction of actress Elizabeth Taylor's world-renowned jewels took in $116 million, more than double the record for a single collection, and set new marks for pearls, colorless diamonds and Indian jewels.

Christie's sale of 80 items from Taylor's collection on Tuesday had been estimated to raise about $20 million. But everything from her famous 33-carat diamond ring, a gift from Richard Burton, to her charm bracelets sold for many times their estimates.

Record for any photo sold at auction set in NYC

''Rhein II'', 1999 by Andreas Gursky

    AP report:

NEW YORK — A 1999 photograph of the Rhine river by German artist Andreas Gursky has sold for $4.3 million in New York City, setting a record for any photograph sold at auction.

Titled "Rhein II," the chromogenic color print face-mounted to acrylic glass, had a pre-sale estimate of $2.5 million to $3.5 million.

It sold Tuesday at Christie's. The buyer was not disclosed.

The previous record for any photography sold at auction was Cindy Sherman's "Untitled," which fetched $3.8 million at Christie's in May.

Gursky's panoramic image of the Rhine is one of an edition of six photographs. Four are in major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Tate Modern in London.
