Demonstrators stand next to riot police on November 2, during a protest as the Ukrainian cabinet was meeting in Kiev. Ukrainian veterans of the clean-up from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster are demonstrating against planned benefit cuts. In September, lawmakers gave initial approval to a bill cutting back benefits paid to those who helped clean up the April 1986 nuclear disaster and those who still live on the affected lands.

Protesters throw petrol bombs at riot police as they demonstrate in front of the Greek parliament in Athens on October 19 as a two-day general strike began against a new austerity bill demanded by Greece's international creditors to avert bankruptcy. Over 52,000 people converged on central Syntagma Square, where parliament is located, in separate protests organised by unions but also joined by unaffiliated Greeks fed up with austerity cuts.

People walk past the Greek parliament during an anti-austerity rally in Athens' Syntagma (Constitution) square on October 19. Greek unions begin a 48-hour general strike on Wednesday, the biggest protest in years, as parliament prepares to vote on sweeping new austerity measures designed to stave off a default that could trigger a crisis in the wider euro zone.

    From msnbc.com news services:

ATHENS, Greece — Demonstrators on Wednesday threw stones and gasoline bombs at police outside parliament during a two-day general strike that unions described as the largest in years.

The protest, which has grounded flights, disrupted public transport and shut down shops to schools in Greece, comes ahead of a parliamentary vote on a fresh package of tax increases and spending cuts required by international creditors in return for crucial bailout cash. Without the money from its partners that use the euro and the International Monetary Fund, Greece has said it will run out of money within a month.  For more on this story click here.

    From Reuters:

ATHENS — Greek riot police fired teargas at anti-austerity protesters pelting them with bottles outside parliament on Sunday in the first such unrest after a summer lull.

The rally of about 2,000 protesters holding banners reading "We won't pay for your crisis" and chanting "Get out of here" took place in Athens, as the country's finance minister was in Washington, scheduled to meet European Union and International Monetary Fund officials to discuss the debt crisis.

Thousands protest pension and benefits cuts in Ukraine

Protesters clash with police in front of Ukrainian parliament in Kiev, Ukraine, September 20. More than 10,000 people, among them Afghanistan war veterans, demonstrated in the Ukrainian capital Kiev to protest proposed benefit cuts, with some of the marchers attempting to break police cordons around the national parliament building. Veterans of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear power accident also participated in the street protests. Like Afghanistan war veterans, Ukraine's Chernobyl victims face reduced pensions and medical payments if parliament passes a cost-cutting bill currently under debate. Protesters shouted ‘Shame’ along with insults, as police struggled to keep demonstrators from overturning barriers. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) officials have said cash-strapped Ukraine must reduce numbers of people receiving social payments and the size of those payments, to obtain further IMF financing.

Relatives of the 1979-89 Soviet Afghan war victims react as they take part in a protest rally against Ukrainian authorities' initiative to cut social benefits near the Parliament headquarters in Kiev on September 20. Hundreds of Ukrainians, mostly veterans of the 1979-89 Soviet Afghan war protesting against plans to cut their payouts and subsidies, tried to storm into the parliament building and scuffled with police on Tuesday.
