Snow falls in Kashmir; avalanche on Siachen Glacier kills six, one missing

An aerial view of the snow-covered Bhadarwah valley is seen about 205 km from Jammu, the winter capital of Kashmir, India, on Dec. 16. Six Indian Army soldiers were killed and one is missing in an avalanche that struck the Siachen Glacier on Dec. 16, in Sub-sector Hanief of the glacier when troops were moving between posts at 19,000 feet. A rescue operation is underway to trace the missing soldier. A medium danger avalanche warning was issued for the area close to the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir and Banihal town on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway as one-way traffic was restored on the arterial road connecting the valley with rest of the country.

4 climbers presumed dead in Mt. McKinley avalanche

Kevin Wright / National Parks Service

On the second day of rescue efforts, climbers skirt the edge of the debris field from a June 14, avalanche that may have buried four Japanese climbers on the West Buttress route of Mount McKinley in Alaska in this June 15 photo.

    National Park Service

Searchers examine flag belonging to Japanese climbers.

The missing climbers were identified as Yoshiaki Kato, 64; Masako Suda, 50; Michiko Suzuki, 56; and Tamao Suzuki, 63. A fifth climber, Hitoshi Ogi, 69, escaped the avalanche and descended to report the incident.

All are from Miyagi Prefecture -- the same area devastated by the 2011 quake and tsunami -- and were descending the mountain when the avalanche hit.

If confirmed, the deaths would be the worst accident on McKinley since 1992, when four Canadian climbers died.

Pakistan army chief vows not to give up on avalanche victims

Half a dozen tattered yellow flags poke from a huge boulder-strewn expanse of gravel and ice. They mark where the buildings of Pakistan's Gayari army base once stood.

In the early hours of April 7 thousands of tonnes of ice, rock and snow crashed down onto the camp, the battalion headquarters of the 6th Northern Light Infantry 13,000 feet up in the mountains of Kashmir.

Pakistani military personnel use heavy machinery as they search for avalanche victims during an ongoing operation at Gayari camp near the Siachen glacier on April 18, 2012.

The disaster that entombed 129 soldiers and 11 civilians has been described as an avalanche, but the dense, rocky rubble that now covers the camp to a depth of around 200 feet looks more like the aftermath of a landslide.

Avalanche brings calls for glacier demilitarization

More than 450 rescuers are working at the site near the de facto border with India in the militarized region of Kashmir, though experts have said there is virtually no chance of finding any survivors.

The army has listed the names of the missing soldiers and civilians on its public relations website. There have been no death announcements and the military says it will not abandon the search and rescue effort.

"We will continue to make all efforts. Whether it takes 10 days or 10 months or if it takes three years, we are not going to give up on this," said General Ashfaq Kayani, Pakistan's army chief. "If we have to dig out this mountain, we'll dig it out."

Deadly avalanches wreak havoc in Indian Kashmir

    Dar Yasin / AP

A Kashmiri villager slips as he clears snow off the roof of his house in Gagangeri, northeast of Srinagar on Feb. 23.

AP Reports: Two massive avalanches in snowbound regions of Indian-controlled Kashmir killed at least 16 soldiers, and at least three others were feared trapped in a military camp that was partially buried under snow, an official said Thursday.

Col. K.S. Grewal said three of the soldiers were killed in the mountainous area of Sonamarg and 13 were killed at a large army camp in Dawar, a town close to the heavily militarized cease-fire line that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan. Hundreds of thousands of Indian troops are stationed along this de-facto border. Both avalanches took place late Wednesday night, and state officials warned more may occur in mountain areas.

Rescue workers in Dawar pulled out 13 survivors who were being treated at a local army hospital, Grewal said. Three soldiers there were still believed to be trapped under the snow, he said. Dawar, in the frontier Gurez region, remains cut off from the rest of Kashmir for nearly five months every year as heavy snowfall and rains block road links to the region.

9 die in Kosovo avalanche; child survives

    Valdrin Xhemaj / EPA

Members of Kosovo Security Force (KSF) and fire fighters search for a missing person at the site where an avalanche hit houses in the village of Restelica, Kosovo, Feb. 12. At least nine people died and one is missing after an avalanche hit the village of Restelica in southern Kosovo on Feb. 11. Police said some 15 houses were swallowed up by the avalanche but only two were occupied at the time.

    AP

Members of Kosovo Security Forces (KSF) and fire fighters search for a missing person at the site where an avalanche hit houses in the village of Restelica, southern Kosovo, Sunday, Feb. 12. Rescuers pulled a 5-year-old girl alive from the rubble of a house flattened by a massive avalanche that killed both of her parents and at least seven of her relatives in the remote mountain village.

NATO peacekeepers, deployed in Kosovo to end the armed conflict between Serbs and Kosovo Albanians in 1999, had been called in to help local authorities in the rescue operation, but were unable to land a helicopter in the blizzard.

Rescuers — mostly local villagers using shovels — initially dug out the bodies of a married couple and their 17-year-old son. Six more bodies were discovered during the overnight and Sunday excavation.

"No bigger tragedy has ever struck this region," said local district official Behar Ramadani. "Two brothers with their wives and children have been killed."

Dog found alive 4 days after Montana avalanche

    Natasha Baydakova / AP

In this photo released by Natasha Baydakova on Wednesday Jan. 4, 2011 showing a Welsh corgi dog named Ole.

AP reports: Search and rescue team member Bill Whittle said he was "positive" that the Welsh corgi — named Ole — had been buried in Saturday's avalanche.

"The avalanche guys were up there on Monday investigating and they were looking for the dog too and never seen any signs," he said.

But on Wednesday, Ole showed up exhausted and hungry back at the motel, four miles from where the slide occurred, the Billings Gazette reported.
