Abandoned spider monkey is adopted by Melbourne Zoo

    By Mish Whalen

A little Spider monkey Estela and her mother Sunshine failed to bond after she was born in January, forcing zoo keepers to step in and care for her to ensure her survival. The baby spider monkey which is native to Central America, is currently receiving six feeds of formula a day and is now slowly being introduced to solid foods. Read more here.

A newborn pangolin looks on from a cage after being born shortly before a press conference in Bangkok, Thailand on April 20. Thai customs seized 173 smuggled pangolins and 130 kilograms of dried snake skins valued at 66,000 US dollars, customs said. The pangolin is listed as an endangered species in CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species).

Orphaned baby orangutan shows affection for a stuffed animal toy

    Andrea Comas / Reuters

Baby orangutan 'Boo,' plays with a blanket at the Madrid Zoo and Aquarium, April 14.

    Andrea Comas / Reuters

'Boo,' a 9-month-old orphan, plays with a toy during a presentation at the Madrid Zoo and Aquarium, April 14. Boo, the first orangutan born at the zoo, has been adopted by a female orangutan and is bottle fed by one of the keepers.

    By Phaedra Singelis, NBC News

According to the Madrid Zoo's website:

He was born on July 5, 2010 and at the end of February, his mother died from a chronic pulmonary disorder. Despite having had this condition for years, she was able to give birth normally and took excellent care of Boo until she passed away. The zoo tried to make sure her death had minimal impact on Boo – they fed him three times a day and started to reintroduce him to his “aunts” in order to make sure he wasn’t imprinted with human behavior.

I have to nominate 'Boo' for our 'cutest-thing-ever.' You can see the other nominees here. Or see more photos of animals in our weekly slideshow, 'Animal tracks.'

Boo, the 9-month-old orangutan who was left orphaned a few months ago, has been adopted by one of the Madrid Zoo's female orangutans. TODAY.com's Dara Brown reports.

Shaking hands and kissing babies in Canada

    Mark Blinch / Reuters

Liberal Party leader Michael Ignatieff holds a crying baby at his campaign headquarters in Toronto, April 8, 2011. Canadians will head to the polls in a federal election on May 2.

    By Robert Hood

I’m surprised when I see a politician reach for a baby at a political event. The scene is always ripe with the potential for comically unpleasant pictures. This picture of Ignatieff is good, but Jim Bourg’s picture of President Bush from 2006 is my favorite “baby kissing gone bad" photo. I laugh every time I see it.

    Jim Bourg / Reuters file

U.S. President George W. Bush hands back a crying baby that was handed to him from the crowd as he arrived for an outdoor dinner with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Trinwillershage July 13, 2006.

This photo made Saturday, Feb. 26, shows Lipan High School girls basketball coach Amber Branson holding her newborn daughter, Leslie, as she celebrates with members of her team in a hospital in Abilene, Texas. Shortly after coaching Lipan to a regional semifinal victory last Friday, Branson gave birth to daughter Leslie. And about 15 hours later, she was back on the bench guiding the Lady Indians to another win and the school's first berth in the Texas state tournament since 2003.

Kid looks a little miffed about being baptized! I know I would be if someone made that choice for me! Religion is a scary thing even for adults. Can you imagine what a baby was feeling with being "drowned" in a tub of water? "OMG- THEY ARE TRYING TO KILL ME AND I JUST GOT HERE!"

Mauro (R) and his partner Juan Carlos from Spain hold their twin babies at a private hospital after an Indian surrogate mother delivered twin baby girls for them in New Delhi February 16, 2011. Surrogate motherhood is among the latest in a long list of roles being outsourced to India, where rent-a-womb services are far cheaper than in the West. Fertility clinics usually charge $2,000-$3,000 for the procedure while a surrogate is paid anything between $3,000 and $6,000, a fortune in a country with an annual per capita income of around $500. But the practice is not without its critics in India with some calling it the "commoditisation of motherhood" and an exploitation of the poor by the rich.

Couple with new twins in India, where surrogate mothers earn between $3,000 and $6,000

Here are two stories from the Times of India about this couple and surrogate motherhood in India.

Marine widow with newborn son mourns their loss at Arlington National Cemetary

    By Carissa Ray

I had just seen these photos move on the wire and was preparing them for the PhotoBlog when the photographer posted a wrenching detail on Facebook that added another layer of depth.

Evan Vucci posted: Just photographed the funeral of Marine Cpl. Derek Wyatt who was killed in Afghanistan on Dec. 6. His son was born 24 hours after the news of his death. Heartbreaking...

Wyatt, of Akron, Ohio, was killed Dec. 6 in Afghanistan. Wyatt's son was born 24 hours after his wife received the news of his death.

    Evan Vucci / AP

Kait Wyatt clutches a flag during the burial service for her husband, Marine Cpl. Derek Wyatt at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., Friday, January 7, 2011. Wyatt, of Akron, Ohio, was killed Dec. 6 in Afghanistan. Wyatt's son was born 24 hours after his wife received the news of his death.

More on Cpl. Wyatt and memories of him in his Ohio hometown can be found at The Akron Beacon Journal:

Akron Deputy Mayor Dave Lieberth said Mayor Don Plusquellic has sent a letter to Wyatt's parents indicating that ''he would like them to participate in a decision about how best to memorialize'' their son in his hometown. . .  Akron officials are also interested in discussing the broader issue of memorializing all those from the city who have died in war, Lieberth said.

''It needs to be bigger,'' he said of the discussion.

There is no single city memorial to honor all who have died, Lieberth said, although there are memorials for the Civil War, World Wars I and II, Korea and Vietnam within the city.

''We need to find a way to remember those who died in service to our country,'' Lieberth said. (full story)
