Edgar Allan Poe fans call an end to 'Toaster' tradition

Jeff Jerome, top left, curator of the Poe House and Museum, and Jeannette Marxen stand watch at a window in Westminster Hall, which overlooks the grave of Edgar Allan Poe in Baltimore early in the morning of Jan. 19, 2012, as they wait to see if the mysterious "Poe Toaster" will return.

A flashlight shines on items left at Poe's gravestone by people who pretended to be the "Poe Toaster".

The Associated Press reports from BALTIMORE:

Edgar Allan Poe fans waited long past a midnight dreary, but it appears the annual visits to the writer's grave by a mysterious figure in black called the "Poe Toaster" will occur nevermore.

The tributes of an anonymous man, who leaves three roses and a half-empty bottle of cognac at Poe's original grave on the writer's birthday, are thought to date to least the 1940s. While three impersonators appeared this time, the real "Poe Toaster" did not, Poe House and Museum Curator Jeff Jerome said. Read the full story.

New National Security Cutter Stratton arrives in Baltimore

    By Rich Shulman

I guess it's no surprise that the Coast Guard decided to refer to its new high-tech Legend class cutters as "National Security Cutters".

Gulflive.com reports on the construction of the Stratton.

    Molly Riley / Reuters

U.S. Coast Guard's newest National Security Cutter, Stratton is anchored near Annapolis, Maryland, before heading to Baltimore, on November 1. The National Security Cutter (NSC) is the largest and most technically advanced class of cutter in the Coast Guard, with capabilities for maritime homeland security, law enforcement and national defense missions.

I served in the US Navy from 1956 to 1975 and retired with 20 years service. During that time I never really had much to say about or think about the US Coast Guard.

As a scoreboard worker looks on, Baltimore Orioles left fielder Felix Pie fields a fly that was hit by Boston Red Sox's Josh Reddick in the ninth inning of the game at Fenway Park in Boston on Sept. 21, 2010.

    An Oriole catches a fly

I love baseball, and this picture shows why. Baseball is a team sport, but it is made up of individual achievements and failures. Everyone has to be able to hit the ball. Everyone has to be able to field the ball. Contrast that with football where you might play a whole season without touching the ball. Compare it to soccer where you might play defense in the back of the field and never get the opportunity to attempt a goal.
