Gunbattle sends Mexico baseball players running for cover

    AP

Baseball players belonging to the Saraperos de Saltillo team and spectators take cover during an intense shootout that broke out in the parking lot of the stadium in the city of Saltillo, northern Mexico, on March 13, 2012.

A gunbattle near a baseball stadium in the Mexican city of Saltillo killed three suspected gunmen and sent players scurrying for cover on Tuesday, The Associated Press reports.

Sergio Sisbeles, a state security spokesman, said the gunbattle broke out after gunmen opened fire on a state police patrol on a street near the stadium while the Saraperos team was playing an exhibition match against a local youth team.

Police chased the gunmen, killing three and wounding another. Local media reported there were no injuries among the players or fans.

Drug cartels are active in the region, but police did not say whether the suspects belonged to a gang. Read more.

This is what we let into the U.S.. Millions yearly pour in illegally and by mid century will be the predominant race. There is not a single country in South America that is not considered 3rd world which is exactly what America is headed for. There is a reason races separate naturally.

If they build it, will you go?

Dave Kettering / Debuque Telegraph Herald file via AP

People enjoy the "Field of Dreams" baseball field in rural Dyersville, Iowa.

    By Robert Hood

“Field of Dreams” is one of the few movies that actually moved me to tears when I saw it in the theater. I know it’s corny, but it still does. I can’t stop myself from watching whenever I run across it while channel surfing late-night television. Who can resist ghosts, baseball and believing in the impossible?

It appears that the town where the movie was shot continues to wrestle with one of the central questions of the movie. Dyersville, Iowa is considering a $38 million plan to turn the farmland around the famous cornfield diamond into a marquee destination for traveling youth baseball teams. While the plan could provide an economic lift to the region, it also has unleashed an emotional battle as the town of 4,000 tries to decide if they should build it.

From the City of Dyersville website:

In 1982, screenwriter Phil Robinson became interested in the novel "Shoeless Joe."  He recognized the potential for this heartwarming story and looked for a setting for the film.  In the early months of 1988, Robinson came upon the Lansing farm near Dyersville and said, "That's it!  That's my farm!"  The movie produced was called "The Field of Dreams," starring Kevin Costner and James Earl Jones.  Today the site is well maintained and visited by many baseball enthusiasts.

Venezuelan cops rescue kidnapped Nationals catcher

    Luis Hernandez / Reuters

Baseball player Wilson Ramos kisses his girlfriend after being rescued in Valencia Nov. 12. Venezuelan security forces rescued kidnapped Major League Baseball player Wilson Ramos on Friday, two days after he was abducted in a case that underlined the country's security problems. The 24-year-old Washington Nationals catcher was abducted by armed men Wednesday night while he chatted with friends and relatives at his mother's home in the Venezuelan city of Valencia.

    Luis Hernandez / Reuters

Venezuelan police escort men arrested in connection with the kidnapping of baseball player Wilson Ramos in Valencia, Venezuela, Nov. 12.

    According to AP:

"I don't know who those people were. I know they're Colombians by their accent," Ramos said. "Three guys grabbed me there in front of my house, they took me to another SUV and from there they took me into the mountains," in central Carabobo state.

He said his abductors spoke little to him. "They simply told me to cooperate, that they were going to ask for a ton of cash for me."

"They put me in a room with a bed. I was lying there," he said. "It was hard for me to think about, if I was going to get out alive first of all ... about how my family, my mother were."

Pujols statue unveiled outside star's restaurant

    By Rich Shulman

I like the way Pujols joins the pack of photographers (bottom photo) to get his own shot.

    AP reports:

ST. LOUIS - Hundreds of St. Louis Cardinals fans turned out for the unveiling of an Albert Pujols statue outside his restaurant.

Some of the fans encouraged him to stay in St. Louis. Pujols did not mention free agency Wednesday during his speech as he stood near the 10-foot, 1,100-pound bronze likeness of himself.

Funds for the statue were provided by an anonymous donor two years ago. The sculpture was made by Harry Weber and is similar to Weber's work on Cardinals Hall of Famers outside Busch Stadium.

St. Louis welcomes the Cardinals home after their World Series win
