KA-POW! Batman fights drug traffickers in Brazil

    Roosevelt Cassio / Reuters

Retired Brazilian police officer Andre Luiz Pinheiro, 50, dressed as superhero Batman, talks to children in a public school in Taubate city in Sao Paulo state March 17, 2012. Pinheiro is helping police patrol the crime-ridden streets of Taubate, in Brazil. He was officially presented in the districts with the highest crime rates in Sao Paulo state. Police captain Warley Takeo, one of the policemen who decided to bring in the character to help them fight drug traffickers, said the measure would bring long-term benefits. Takeo said making a connection between the police and Batman would help children have a clearer idea of good and bad.

The Telegraph reports the Pinheiro said, "I will not actually battle crime. But I do think I am fighting crime in a preventive way, by helping these children to avoid becoming criminals. This is my job, this is my battle."

Do you think comic book heros can help restore the image of police officers and keep kids from becoming criminals?

'Slovak Batman' lives in abandoned building, fights litter

    Radovan Stoklasa / Reuters

Zoltan Kohari, known as the Slovak Batman, leaves home in town of Dunajska Streda, some 34 miles south of Bratislava. Kohari, who is 26 years old, lives alone in an abandoned building without water, heat or electricity. For local residents he became known as the hero in a Batman's costume. While he has not fought crime yet, he does believe in justice and wants to help the police. In the mean time, Kohari, who is poor, does what he can to help the residents to make their daily life easier. In return, some of these residents give him food.

Batman vs. El toro at the annual bullfight festival in Costa Rica

    By James Cheng

    Where is Batman's sidekick Robin?

From Costa Rica.com: The event is held at the Zapote fairgrounds in San Jose, and the formal Spanish tradition has evolved somewhat. The bull ring is opened December 26th, and the famous bullfights begin. The runs consist of improvised bullfighters that take their turn jumping in the ring to tease and make fun of the bull. In Costa Rica it is prohibited by national law to kill the bull.

There can be anywhere from five to thirty people in the ring at anytime, and in most cases when the bull gets close, everyone jumps over the fence to safety. The bullfights are now looked at as a comedic event with no competitive aspect as anyone who thinks he or she is brave enough can jump in the bullring. This is always a big headache for the Red Cross, as it has to rescue those who don’t get out in time.

Nope!  Costa Rica has bull RIDING, not bull FIGHTING!  Big difference.  Pura Vida!
