Some of those firearms look like collectors pieces that have been in the family for years, too bad that sheepol have the sense that firearms are somehow evil and need to be disposed of in such a despondent way.

Molten gold signals revival in California's mother lode

    Rich Pedroncelli / AP

In this photo taken Thursday, Dec. 13, Sutter Gold Mining Co. mill superintendent Paul Skinner pours the first thin stream of glowing molten gold into a mold, forming a shiny one-inch pyramid, near Sutter Creek, Calif. The company announced Monday, Dec. 17, that it poured its first gold as it prepared to begin the first large-scale Sierra Nevada underground gold mining operation in a half century.

    By Don Thompson, Associated Press

The last of California's great gold mines closed a generation ago. But with the price of the metal near historic highs, hovering around $1,700 an ounce, the first large-scale hard rock gold mining operation in a half-century is coming back to life.

Miners are digging again where their forebears once unearthed riches from eight historic mines that honeycomb Sutter Gold Mining Co.'s holdings about 50 miles southeast of Sacramento.

The gravity table uses technology similar to those used by gold rush-era miners who used pans to separate gold from surrounding materials.

By spring, the company's 110 employees expect to be removing 150 tons of ore a day from a site immediately north of the old Lincoln Mine, enough to produce nearly 2,000 ounces of gold each month.

Clerical union strike idles LA ports

Photos by Jonathan Alcorn / Reuters

Anchored container ships sit offshore near the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach during a strike by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 63 Office Clerical Unit in Los Angeles, Calif., Dec. 2, 2012. The strike by clerical workers at the twin ports idled most of the busiest U.S. cargo shipping complex for a sixth day on Sunday as container-laden vessels waited to be unloaded and marathon contract talks stretched into the night.

Union members walk a picket line during the strike near APM Terminals in Los Angeles, Calif., on Sunday. Some 10,000 members of the local union were refusing to cross picket lines of some 500 striking clerical workers, effectively shutting down 10 of the two ports' combined 14 container terminals.

The Los Angeles Times reports that a small union is causing big problems for giant Southern California ports.

The small band of strikers that has effectively shut down the nation's busiest shipping complex forced two huge cargo ships to head for other ports Thursday and kept at least three others away, hobbling an economic powerhouse in Southern California.

The disruption is costing an estimated $1 billion a day at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, on which some 600,000 truckers, dockworkers, trading companies and others depend for their livelihoods.

A road normally crowded with trucks is seen empty during the strike at the Port of Los Angeles on Sunday.

Black Friday shoppers pass Walmart picket

    Noah Berger / Reuters

Anthony Trujillo pickets outside a Walmart store as holiday sales commence in San Leandro, California on November 22, 2012. Calling on Walmart to treat workers with more respect, a group of about 30 demonstrators spent several hours standing outside the store, Reuters reported.

The group behind the protest actions, OUR Walmart, told TODAY on Wednesday that they are striking to protest what they say is manager retaliation against employees who complain about working conditions. Wal-Mart said they were "really confident" that Black Friday would go off without a hitch.

Prison doctors get higher pay for dangerous job

All photos by Rich Pedroncelli / AP

Dr. David Mathis waits to be let into the main building of the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, Calif., Sept. 12, 2012.

A whistle hangs from Dr. David Mathis' coat pocket as he does his rounds on Sept. 12. The whistle is worn in case he needs help in an emergency.

Rich Pedroncelli, AP — Dr. David Mathis, a board certified physician,  was the highest paid prison doctor last year, earning a base salary of $239,572 and an additional $169,548 for working overnight shifts, weekends and holidays.  Prison doctors say they are worth higher pay because they face constant threat of assault from inmates.

Good for them! Long hours, hazardous conditions, volitile patients, and being on constant call deserve greater compensation. I wouldn't want to work in a prison if I could work in a nice hospital or my own practice someplace!

NBC News and news services - The space shuttle Endeavour finished its flying days for good on Friday with a sightseeing tour that crisscrossed California and ended up at Los Angeles' airport. Strapped to the back of a 747 jumbo jet, the pair touched down just before 1 p.m. PT (4 p.m. ET) after a state-spanning flyover that lasted nearly five hours. One of the crew members stuck an American flag out of the hatch of the jet.
