Published 3:30pm ET -- Though samba dancers, or "passistas," as they're known in Portuguese, are unquestionably the star attractions of the world's most iconic Carnival celebrations, they're not on the payroll of the samba school they represent. Diana Prado made her Carnival debut at age 19, after auditioning for a spot with the Sao Clemente, one of 13 top-tier schools that will compete for the annual titles at the Sambadrome this weekend.

Prado spends her daylight hours working at a call center. At night, she is a samba dancer for the Sao Clemente group. Although her hectic schedule of pre-Carnival preparations often requires her to apply her extravagant glitter stage makeup in the office bathroom, Prado insists being a "passista" doesn't undermine her authority with the 15 telemarketers she supervises.

London's Notting Hill Carnival, the largest street festival of its kind in Europe — expected to attract around 1 million revelers this year— began on Sunday with brightly costumed dancers and traditional floats parading along a three-and-a-half mile route.

The Caribbean-inspired celebration, which has taken place every August Bank Holiday since 1966, reaches its climax on Monday. Read more about the carnival from NBC News' U.K. partner ITV News.

    Kicking-off Haiti's Carnival of Flowers

Two women pose for pictures during the Carnaval des Fleurs, or Carnival of Flowers, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on July 29. The carnival, a three-day festival, marks new beginnings and the revitalization of Haiti with a Sunday parade, concerts and street dancing. Some critics have questioned the wisdom of spending about $1.6 million on the event. The government countered saying the celebration boosts morale and provides jobs.

On Saturday, a record-breaking 2.2 million people had attended the Cordao da Bola Preta parade, one of the city's oldest carnival street parties, the BBC reports.

The authorities see the five-day event as a crucial test for Rio's new central command center, which the city hopes will be a key to keeping order when it hosts 2014 soccer World Cup matches and the 2016 Olympics.

AP reports: The globe's biggest Carnival bash opens Friday, and it promises to be an even bigger blowout this year, with 20 percent more tourists expected than in 2011. Rio officials say they're also better prepared to keep the chaos under some semblance of control, with more portable toilets, traffic guards and paramedics, as well as a new central command center monitoring it all.

"We want revelers to be conscious that they can party but also care for the city's public spaces," the president of Rio's tourism department, Antonio Figueira de Mello, said in a statement.

About 850,000 tourists are expected during the raucous, five-day free-for-all that kicks off when Rio's mayor hands the key to the city to rotund King Momo, the mythical jester figure who reigns over Carnival.

The annual festival, which lasts nearly three weeks, will see the streets and canals of Venice filled with people wearing highly-decorative and imaginative costumes and masks.

Nestled on a gentle lagoon, Venice is a world treasure whose timeless beauty encourages all manner of excess - including the prices at Carnival time.

The rest of Italy and the euro zone may be tightening their belts as a result of a debt crisis, but visitors to Venice in the two weeks before Lent begins can still indulge in a whirlwind of masked parades, costume balls, parties, brunch with "cicchetti" and live entertainment.
