Vietnamese families on the 23rd day of the last month of the lunar year are busy preparing a farewell ceremony for the Kitchen Gods (Tao Quan) on their yearly trip to heaven. As the Tao Quan make their journey on the backs of fish, it is traditional to release live carp into lakes or rivers, which is considered to bring good luck.
