College football is all shook up: Stanford takes down Oregon; Baylor destroys Kansas State

    Steve Dykes / Getty Images

Quarterback Kevin Hogan #8 of the Stanford Cardinal is mobbed by fans after defeating the Oregon Ducks at Autzen Stadium on Nov. 17, in Eugene, Ore. Stanford won the game 17-14 in overtime.

Jordan Williamson hit a 37-yard field goal in overtime and No. 14 Stanford upset No. 1 Oregon 17-14, denying the Ducks a chance to clinch the Pac-12 North and derailing their straight shot at the BCS title game.

A Baylor Bear fan cheers on the field after a 52-24 win against the Kansas State Wildcats at Floyd Casey Stadium on Nov. 17, in Waco, Texas.

Collin Klein and second-ranked Kansas State can still get to a BCS game. Getting to the BCS championship game is all but lost.

Glasco Martin ran for three touchdowns, Lache Seastrunk had 185 yards rushing with an 80-yard score and Baylor again upset the BCS picture with a late-season victory, beating the Wildcats 52-24 Saturday night.

No. 21 Stanford upsets No. 2 USC, 21-14

Coming out of a two-year bowl ban, USC had national title hopes. Now the Trojans will have to climb out of a hole to get there.

A sold-out crowd at Stanford Stadium rushed the field, tossing streamers and jumping in a wild celebration at midfield with Stanford coach David Shaw and players caught in the middle of the mess. The Cardinal (3-0, 1-0) are 3-0 for the third straight season for the first time since 1970-72 and have their longest winning streak ever against USC.

Penn State removes statue of Joe Paterno

    John Beale / AP

Workers handle the statue of former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno before removing the statue Sunday, July 22, in State College, Pa. The famed statue of Paterno was taken down from outside the Penn State football stadium Sunday, eliminating a key piece of the iconography surrounding the once-sainted football coach accused of burying child sex abuse allegations against a retired assistant.

Meanwhile, the NCAA said that that it would levy "corrective and punitive measures" against Penn State in the wake of the child sex-abuse scandal involving former football assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. The organization announced Sunday that it would spell out the sanctions on Monday but disclosed no details.

NCAA President Mark Emmert hasn't ruled out the possibility of shutting down the Penn State football program in the wake of the scandal, adding that he had "never seen anything as egregious."

A man kneels in prayer near a statue of legendary Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, Jan. 25.

Former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno's funeral procession drove slowly past Beaver Stadium and through the town where he lived and worked for more than 60 years.

Thousands of mourners waited on the sidewalks, four deep and more in some places, for a glimpse of the electric-blue hearse carrying Paterno's casket. The convoy also included buses filled with Paterno's family, former players and other guests.

Paterno died of lung cancer Sunday at 85. He served as the school's head football coach for 46 years and won two national titles before being fired in November in the wake of a child sex-abuse scandal involving a former assistant.

“It is with great sadness that we announce that Joe Paterno passed away earlier today,” a statement from the family read. ”His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled. He died as he lived. He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been. His ambitions were far reaching, but he never believed he had to leave this Happy Valley to achieve them. He was a man devoted to his family, his university, his players and his community.”

    From CFT:

RGIII grabbed 405 of 846 first-place votes and 1,687 points to take home the trophy; Luck had 247 first place points and 1,407 points; Richardson received 138 first place votes and 978 points. Ball and Matheiu finished fourth and fifth in the voting, respectively.

“This is unbelievably believable,” Griffin III said in his acceptance speech. “To Baylor nation, I say this is a forever moment, may we be blessed enough to have more of these in the future.”

Griffin won 5 of 6 voting regions, with the exception being the Far West region, which was won by Luck.  However, votes for Boise State’s Kellen Moore and USC’s Matt Barkley cut into Luck’s voting — perhaps just enough to keep last year’s runner-up in the same spot this year.

Drew Alleman (center) of the LSU Tigers celebrates after kicking the game-winning field goal in overtime to defeat the Alabama Crimson Tide 9-6 during their game at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Nov. 5, 2011 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

LSU celebrates overtime victory against Alabama

    AP reports

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - No. 1 LSU gained the inside track to the BCS title game, beating No. 2 Alabama 9-6 on Drew Alleman's 25-yard field goal in overtime after a fierce defensive struggle in which neither team reached the end zone Saturday night.

The Crimson Tide missed four field goals, including Cade Foster's 52-yard attempt after Alabama got the ball first in the extra period. LSU appeared to win the game on Michael Ford's run around left end after taking a pitch, but he stepped out of bounds at the 7.

After two plays gained nothing, LSU sent in Alleman to attempt his third field goal of the game on third down. Alabama tried to freeze him by calling timeout, but he calmly knocked it through to set off a wild celebration by the visiting team.

The crowd of more than 100,000 at Bryant-Denny Stadium — most of them dressed in crimson — sat in stunned silence as LSU celebrated its victory. Read more…

No. 4 Wisconsin stunned by Michigan State on last-second Hail Mary

    AP reports:

With 4 seconds left, Cousins rolled out to his right and threw it about as far as he could. The ball went into the end zone but caromed off Michigan State receiver B.J. Cunningham's facemask back to Nichol, who caught it just outside the end zone and struggled for the goal line, fighting two Wisconsin defenders and just barely breaking the plane.

The former backup quarterback was initially ruled short of the end zone, but officials overturned the call after a review, giving the Spartans (6-1, 3-0 Big Ten) the win and knocking the Badgers (6-1, 2-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten.
