Kari Huus of msnbc.com reports from Denver — It's been just a week since the Waldo Canyon fire crested the mountain range next to Colorado Springs and roared toward the state’s second-largest city.

In that time, 32,000 people have been evacuated. Two people have died in the blaze, and 346 homes have burned to their foundations. Firefighters have been battling 24-7, and with the help of shifting winds, have the fire 55 percent contained, according to the National Interagency Coordinating Center.

While the fire threat is currently waning and many evacuees are returning home, the damage, dislocation and trauma from the wildfire remain. Read the full story.

Homes reduced to ashes by wildfire in Colorado

    Rick Wilking / Reuters

One of the partially destroyed homes is still smoldering among those totally destroyed in the Waldo Canyon fire in Colorado Springs, Colorado on Thursday, Cooler temperatures and lighter winds helped firefighters in the battle against the fire, which has destroyed hundreds of homes and forced more than 35,000 people to flee.

This aerial photo shows the destructive path of the Waldo Canyon fire in the Mountain Shadows subdivision area of Colorado Springs, Colo., on Thursday.

Miguel Llanos reports that hundreds of homes have burned in the Colorado Springs area:

"There was nothing left in some areas -- burned out foundations that were smoldering. It looked like a nuclear weapon had been dropped. It's as close to hell as I could imagine," Mayor Steve Bach said after touring the heavily damaged Mountain Shadows subdivision.

Wildfire threatens Colorado Springs, prompts evacuation of 11,000 residents

    Bryan Oller / AP

Smoke billows from a wildfire burning near Colorado Springs, Colo., June 24.

The fire erupted and grew out of control to more than 3 square miles early Sunday, prompting the evacuation of more than 11,000 residents and an unknown number of tourists. On Saturday, a blaze destroyed 21 structures near the mountain community of Estes Park.

"We're used to flooding and tornadoes, nothing like this," said Amanda Rice of Rock Falls, Ill., who evacuated a Manitou Springs hotel late Saturday with her husband, four children and dog. Some travelers were awoken with evacuation orders. Rice, scared when she saw flames, took her family to the evacuation center before she was told to go.

"It was just this god-awful orange glow. It was surreal. It honestly looked like hell was opening up," Rice said Sunday.
