Gaucho and horse a study in concentration

A gaucho rides an unbroken horse during the annual celebration of Criolla Week in Montevideo, Uruguay, on March 25, 2013.

Throughout Easter Week gauchos, the Latin American equivalent of the North American cowboy, from all over Uruguay and neighboring Argentina and Brazil visit Montevideo to compete for the award of best rider.

A study in concentration? A study in breaking an animal's spirit. How noble.

The Cowtown Rodeo keeps the cowboy experience alive in New Jersey

Photos by Tom Mihalek / Reuters

A steer is roped by one of the two cowboys in the Team Roping event at Cowtown Rodeo in Woodstown, New Jersey, July 7, 2012.

Troy Alexander, from Federalsburg, Maryland, concentrates as he prepares for a ride on bull "I-33" on Saturday.

    By Robert Hood

    From the Cowtown Rodeo website:

Cowtown Rodeo was started in conjunction with the Salem County Fair in Woodstown NJ in 1929. The rodeo was held annually during the Fair until 1937. World War II caused the rodeo to be put on hold until 1955

Howard Harris Sr. and and his son, Stoney worked together to establish what is now known as the "oldest weekly rodeo in the United States." Cowtown Rodeo was, and is, known nationwide due to live national TV exposure in 1957 and 1958 and taped exposure nationwide in 1968 and 1969. The rodeo outgrew the original arena and in 1967 Harris built the present arena with a seating capacity of 4000.

Libyan rebel cowboy watches out for airstrikes and an oil facility burns

While updating our Libya slideshow covering the unrest there, I came across the top image which reminds me of an American cowboy. Additionally, the images of the strike and explosion at the oil facility produced some incredible images. Latest news from Libya.

Why not offer a one million dollar reward to every pilot who defects and flies his plane to Malta? That would be comparatively cheep solution. Step up to the plate, France, UK, Italy and The US and ante up!

A gaucho, or cowboy, rides a horse as he competes during a rodeo in Escobar, Argentina, Nov. 28.

A gaucho takes on a horse in Argentina

By Katie Cannon, Senior Multimedia Editor

Argentine cowboys must stay on a horse for approximately 15 seconds compared to saddle bronc riders in the United States who only have to last for eight seconds. Either count would be a tough task.

A young cowboy cries as he rides his horse during the annual International Livestock Show in Havana, Cuba, on Saturday, Oct. 2

    Little buckaroo

I wonder why pictures that show a child in distress in a harmless situation often elicit a chuckle, albeit an empathetic chuckle, from many of us. Maybe it is because if this little guy were to see this picture years down the road, he'd probably look back and have a little laugh himself.

I think this is sad. I wonder why he is crying.
