Say hi! Panda cubs wave, relax in adorable pics

    Katherine Feng / Solent News

Wildlife photographer Katherine Feng captured these cute photos of panda cubs on a trip to China.

    By Meena Hart Duerson, TODAY
A group of panda cubs are melting hearts this week as they play around and pose in a series of almost unbearably cute photos, from flashing a wave to kicking back and chilling out.

The cubs were snapped in action at the Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda at the Wolong Nature Reserve in Sichuan, China, according to photographer Dr. Katherine Feng.

    Katherine Feng / Solent News

In this picture, a baby panda lies on its back in an incubator.

One blissed-out panda cub was the picture of relaxation as he sprawled on his back in an incubator with his paws cupped behind his head.

Medics weighed, measured and fed the 37-day-old before returning him to the see-through box, according to Feng, where he wriggled around and settled on his back.

    Katherine Feng / Solent News

This mother panda carried its new baby in its mouth.

The 65-year-old photographer also captured one panda lying on its stomach, its paw raised as if to offer a "high five."

In another image, a panda is seen carrying its baby in its mouth just a few hours after the cub was born.

"It was so tempting to pet and play with the baby pandas," Feng said, according to the Sun. "They are roly-poly balls of black and white and so cute to watch."

    Katherine Feng / Solent News

Feng has been photographing pandas for years, ever since she formed a bond with the reserve on her first trip to China.

The photos were taken at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda at the Wolong Nature Reserve in Sichuan, China.

Feng, a former veterinarian, became passionate about pandas when she first visited the Wolong Nature Reserve on a trip to China in 1982.

Her photos were featured in the book "Panda Kindergarten," and the Colorado-based photographer now returns to the wildlife preserve several times a year.

A group of giant panda cubs nap at a nursery in the research base of the Giant Panda Breeding Centre in Chengdu, in southwest China's Sichuan province on Sept. 26. China has launched its once-a-decade panda census, trying to determine how many of the endangered animals live in the wild amid efforts to boost numbers. The census -- the fourth since it was first launched in the 1970s -- is also expected to ascertain pandas' living conditions, ages and any change in habitat.

    Mitinori Saitou-Kyoto University via Reuters

Baby mice born from sperm produced from stem cells are seen in this handout photo taken by Kyoto University professor Michinori Saito on November 8, 2010, and released to Reuters on August 5, 2011.

Japanese researchers grow mouse sperm to help with human infertility

    Reuters reports:

Researchers in Japan used embryonic stem cells to grow healthy mouse sperm on laboratory dishes, a development which could help treat human infertility, they said Friday.

The finding, published in the journal Cell, marks a step forward for using stem cells for regenerative medicine.

Stem cells are the body's master cells and source of all cells and tissues. Because they can grow into different types of cells and multiply, experts hope to harness them to treat diseases and disorders, including cancer and diabetes.

Scientists at Kyoto University removed stem cells from mouse embryos and managed to coax them into a type of precursor cell known to grow into either mouse eggs or sperm.

They then transplanted these cells into the testes of infertile male mice -- which apparently went on to produce healthy sperm.

"The sperm were removed directly from the testes and fertilized with eggs (on laboratory dishes)," said lead author Mitinori Saitou, a professor at Kyoto University's department of anatomy and cell biology.

"After insemination, we made two set of embryos and these were transferred into the uterus of the foster mother and they derived healthy mice (that went on to reproduce normally)."

"We have huge materials to work with now and ... we can accelerate our study into the cause of human infertility," Saitou told Reuters.

    msnbc.com news services report:

Thai customs officials found 451 turtles and seven freshwater crocodiles stashed in suitcases offloaded from a passenger flight from Bangladesh.

The animals seized at Bangkok's bustling Suvarnabhumi airport were worth 1 million baht ($33,000), authorities said.

The alleged trafficker, a Bangladeshi national, did not collect the luggage and fled on arrival in Bangkok, customs officials said.

Authorities in Bangkok seized more than 400 turtles which were stuffed into four suitcases. TODAY.com's Dara Brown reports.
