North Koreans celebrate their rulers with song and dance as world watches for missile launch

    David Guttenfelder / AP

North Koreans dance beneath a painting of late leader Kim Il Sung during a mass folk dancing gathering in Pyongyang on April 11. The gathering marked the anniversary of the first of many titles of power given to leader Kim Jong Un after the death of his father Kim Jong Il.

As the United States and South Korea watched nervously for a North Korean missile launch, North Koreans kicked off a spring festival as part of celebrations surrounding the April 15 birthday of founding father Kim Il Sung. Thursday was also the first anniversary of Kim Jong Un's official ascent to power, although he became de-facto leader immediately after his father's death. Read Story

Underpass serves as dance hall for Ukrainian retirees

    Gleb Garanich / Reuters

Mykola Milevsky, 75, left, and Natalia Stolyarenko, 58, stand in their apartment as they prepare to attend an amateur dance gathering in Kiev, Ukraine, Feb. 24.

The dance gathering for pensioners has taken place every Saturday and Sunday for about 20 years in an underpass near a city center metro station in Kiev, Ukraine, where city authorities have allowed the group to meet, as it cannot afford to rent a location. For the gathering's attendees, it is one of the few opportunities to meet and socialize. A few couples have met through the event, and several have settled down to live with each other. Milevsky and Stolyarenko are one of those couples and have lived together for more than four years.

It's refreshing seeing ladies willing to dance who defy the label usually expected of dancers. So many societies are being fed (pun intended) vast amounts of fake body images, photo shopped faces and perfect hair.
