Thousands of supporters from both the ruling and victorious CCM party and opposition CUF party celebrate together in the main square in downtown Stone Town after peaceful Tanzania presidential elections on the semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar, Tanzania, on Nov. 2. Zanzibar remained peaceful today, considered a victory after violence marred the 2005 polls.

When peaceful elections are a reason to celebrate

There were elections happening around the world today, and in Tanzania both victorious and opposing sides took to the streets to celebrate making it through the process without violence. Regardless of how you feel about the election day returns here in the States, the idea that we can vote and express our feelings without persecution is something to be thankful for.

Samoine Chapman pauses to think as she votes with her daughter Giada Chapman, 3, at The Potter's House Church on Nov. 2, in Denver, Colorado. The church is located in Arapahoe County, traditionally a conservative area though during the last election the county was carried by the Democrats. It is considered a bellweather county and will likely end up playing a pivotal role in which direction the state ends up voting. Chapman said this is the second time she has brought her daughter to the polling place hoping to teach her all about the voting process. She said Giada remarked "Mommy, I voted for Obama" as she went through the process this time around.

Nevada paper presents unique vision of Senate race

After sifting through thousands of banal (and not-so-banal) campaign images, it's refreshing to find photographers who have a unique approach to covering the run-up to an election. A recent set of images reminiscent of Choose Me by Arthur Grace has been published by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Photographers K.M. Cannon, Jessica Ebelhar, Jeff Scheid, Jason Bean and John Locher have published a number of slideshows looking under the hood of the Senate, Gubernatorial and House races in Nevada.

From the beginning of this election cycle, the photo staff at the Review-Journal has been pushing themselves to think about their coverage in a more visually interesting way.

"We talked about wanting to get something different," Locher said. "This is an important election. Nevada residents are unhappy and we knew this would be a close race. And with Reid being the Senate majority leader, it made it a bigger deal."

Locher feels that visual coverage like this can reveal important elements about candidates.

“It’s helpful because it gives you more of an idea what campaigning is like and who they really are. [Photojournalists] tend to shoot the organized media events and they kind of look similar; they’re orchestrated for the media. If you can get behind the scenes and pull back the curtain a little, it gives you an idea of who these candidates really are."

You can see more of the Review-Journal's political coverage HERE.

Very telling photos. If I knew nothing about either candidate I would vote for Harry without a doubt. Angle's gun toting, fist shaking stance is too negative for my comfort.
