Peter Fraser prepares to load a freshly shot stag onto a pony.
After forty five years as a professional stalker, and 43 years as the head stalker on the Invercauld Estate, Peter Fraser is working his last red deer stag season before his retirement in November. (Stalking is the term used in Scotland for hunting and shooting deer.) The stalking season runs from July until October.
According to the Invercauld Estate website, "the land has been in the ownership of the Farquharson family for many centuries and extends to approximately 200 square miles of spectacular scenery. The Estate is managed commercially but with great respect for the natural environment."

Smoke from the Waldo Canyon fire blankets a hill in the background as an antlered deer walks through a neighborhood recently evacuated due to the wildfire in Colorado Springs, Colorado on July 2, 2012.

The worst fire season in recent history is taking its toll with large fires burning thousands of acres in Colorado while others consume areas in Montana, Utah, New Mexico and Wyoming.
Kari Huus of msnbc.com reports from Denver — It's been just a week since the Waldo Canyon fire crested the mountain range next to Colorado Springs and roared toward the state’s second-largest city.
In that time, 32,000 people have been evacuated. Two people have died in the blaze, and 346 homes have burned to their foundations. Firefighters have been battling 24-7, and with the help of shifting winds, have the fire 55 percent contained, according to the National Interagency Coordinating Center.
While the fire threat is currently waning and many evacuees are returning home, the damage, dislocation and trauma from the wildfire remain. Read the full story.

WGRZ.com reports: "In an unlikely twist of fate, an adult deer has befriended the mother goose, taking over the role of protector."
What do you think? Is this a match made in heaven, or just a weird animal kingdom coincidence?
