More than 100 killed in Bangladesh factory fire

    Andrew Biraj / Reuters

Members of the police inspect the garment factory after a devastating fire in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, Bangladesh, Nov. 25. A fire swept through Tazreen Fashion factory killing more than 100 people in the country's worst-ever factory blaze.

Witnesses said the workers, mostly women, ran for safety as the fire engulfed the plant, but were unable to come out through narrow exits.

"Many jumped out from the windows and were injured, or died on the spot," said Milon, a resident. "We are appalled to see the charred bodies coming out of the factory since last night. It was an endless stream."

This is one tragedy that should never have occurred. If those who had contracted for such workers, would have simply invested in constructing the building to ensure it met safety standards, these workers would never had died. If any fire would have started, the workers could have safely left the bui …

At least 10 people were injured, including a firefighter who sustained burns, and more than 150 shanties were burned down as a blaze swept through a Dhaka slum, Reuters reports. The local fire department said the cause of the blaze had yet to be ascertained.

Bangladeshi photographer Abir Abdullah, who took the photo below, has been documenting the havoc created by Dhaka's frequent fires for several years. He spoke to The New York Times about the project last month.

A recent UNICEF (United Nation Children’s Fund) report, “The State of the World’s Children 2012: Children in an Urban World,” focuses attention on children in urban areas. One billion children live in urban areas, a number that is growing rapidly. Yet disparities within cities reveal that many lack access to schools, health care and sanitation, despite living alongside these services. Many children are forced to work to support their families. A 2003 report found than more than 6.3 million children under the age of 14 are working in Bangladesh.

Police arrest Sadeque Hossain Khoka, Dhaka City mayor and vice chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), during clashes between police and BNP activists in front of Dhaka Judge Court in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Dec. 4. Activists of the BNP torched a number of motorcycles and a police vehicle and vandalized nearly a dozen cars as police charged at them with batons and fired teargas to disperse the demonstrators during the day-long opposition strike, police said. The activists are against the government's decision to split the city into two administrative zones.

People gather in front of a bus burnt by activists of Bangladesh nationalist Party (BNP) in Dhaka on Tuesday, July 5. At least five buses and a van have been set ablaze in Dhaka on the eve of the 48-hour countrywide strike called by the main opposition BNP and its ally Jamaat-e-Islami, a radical Islamist group. The strike is part of their bid to oust Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power and force an early election.
