    Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum welcomes Discovery

    The Space Shuttle Enterprise is towed from the Space hangar at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly on April 19 prior to a ceremony where Space Shuttle Discovery was officially received by the museum and placed on permanent display. Discovery is the first spaceship of the retired US shuttle fleet to enter its permanent home as a museum artifact, replacing the prototype Enterprise, which will be moved to a museum in New York.

    WASHINGTON — The space shuttle Discovery, NASA's fleet leader and the world's most flown spacecraft, lifted off for the last time on Tuesday to be delivered to the Smithsonian for its permanent display.

    Discovery took off atop NASA's Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, a modified Boeing 747, leaving the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 6:58 a.m. ET, just after dawn, for Washington. The ferry flight was expected to take about three and a half hours.

    msnbc.com story: NASA clears shuttle for launch as storm looms

    Discovery is slated to fly an 11-day mission to the International Space Station to deliver a new storage module and a humanoid robot for the orbiting lab's crew. It will be the 39th and last flight for s pace shuttle Discovery, which is the first of NASA's three shuttles to be retired as the agency winds down its orbiter program next year.
