Belarus soldiers plunge into the ice cold water to mark Orthodox Epiphany near the town Pukhovichi, some 70 km south of the capital Minsk, on Jan. 19, 2012.

For some reason, I never get tired of looking at images of people jumping into ice water - it's got to be such a shocking experience.  I've been in water so cold that I literally couldn't speak, but even it wasn't this cold.

How disgusting. Only religion could make a normally good person do something so terrible to a little girl. Am I the only one that's disgusted by this photo? When are we going to stop torturing innocent children in the name of ancient myths?

There are polar bear plunges, and then there's this - swimming when it's minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit outside. This was one of my favorite images of 2010, but it didn't make the final edit for our Year in Pictures - News slideshow. See the slideshow here.
