Dutch gripped by ice fever as military helps prepare route for historic skating race

Dutch army is deployed on the alternative route of the Eleven Cities Tour (Elfstedentocht) to prepare the alternative route over the Hegemer lake in Woudsend on Wednesday. The Eleven Cities Tour, at almost 200 km, is the world's largest speed skating competition and leisure skating tour, and is held in the province of Friesland, Netherlands only when the ice along the entire course is 15 cm thick.

A worker wearing skates measures, by means of radar beam, the thickness of the ice at a canal in Balk, a village in the route of the Eleven Cities Tour.

Thousands of men and women have been preparing feverishly for the race: to participate, one must be a member of the Elfstedentocht association, and out of more than 30,000 members, only about 16,000 skaters are allowed to compete.

They set off from Leeuwarden in staggered batches of several hundred skaters, the first ones at 5.00 a.m. in the winter dark, while the last lot bring up the rear at about 10 a.m.

    Burning through money in Hungary

    Laszlo Balogh / Reuters

Banknotes that have been removed from circulation await processing at the logistics center of the National Bank of Hungary in Budapest on Feb. 7. More than a $1 billion worth of forints will be converted to fuel and handed out to charities.

    By Jon Sweeney, NBC News

Every year Hungary recycles approximately $1 billion worth of worn out forints, and converts the used currency into bricks. These bricks are sent to several charities, so they can burn them as heating fuel. The program allows the organization to cover up to a third of their annual heating costs.

According to Reuters, Hungary is the only country to recycle its worn cash for fuel each year.

The extreme weather hitting Europe this winter has caused some surreal and beautiful scenes across the continent. Sadly, the picturesque images of iced-covered towns mask the impact the freezing temperatures have on the people experiencing them. In the Ukraine alone there have been over 130 people confirmed dead, and temperatures as low as minus 22 Fahrenheit are expected to continue for another week. There are now fears of deadly flooding that will follow as the climate warms up.

Schools will be closed in Rome on Tuesday, as Italy copes with unusually heavy snow for the Mediterranean country. So far, ten deaths have been linked to winter weather, including two people who were crushed under a collapsed roof south of Rome, and a 91-year-old woman in the northeast port of Trieste who was knocked down by strong winds. In the north, rescuers had to pluck people from their homes, as piles of snow reached 3 meters (10 feet) in some areas. In Milan, Italy's fashion and financial capital, temperatures fell to 10 degrees Fahrenheit on Monday, and the authorities opened a section of the city subway to shelter some 100 homeless people.

    Severe cold continues in Europe

    Michael Reichel / EPA

Ice crystals form on the windshield of a car after a nighttime minimum temperature of minus 20 degrees Celsius in Ilmenau, Germany, Feb. 5. The frosty weather will continue across europe for the coming days, according to weathe forecasts.

msnbc.com staff and news services report:

Steven Keates, a weather forecaster at Britain's Met Office, said the severe wintry conditions were expected to last, and spread to other areas.

"It will still be very cold, maybe not quite the exceptional temperatures we've seen this last week, but still very cold," he told Reuters, saying the current front which brought snow and ice to Britain overnight was now heading to Belgium and Germany.

Extreme cold weather in Ukraine causes 101 deaths

Pedestrians walk near a metro entrance in an air temperature around minus 4 Fahrenheit in central Kiev, on Feb. 3. Thirty-eight more deaths from a cold snap have been registered in Ukraine in the past 24 hours, bringing to 101 the toll from freezing temperatures across the former Soviet republic, the Emergencies Ministry said on Friday.

The death toll from the cold spell reached 101 in Ukraine, up from 63 reported killed by exposure on the day before. More than 1,200 people were treated for cold-related injuries, the Ukraine Ministry of Emergency Situations reported. Freezing cold and snowstorms over Eastern and Central Europe on Friday caused more deaths and disrupted traffic and energy supplies across the continent.

A sparrow with extended feathers due to the cold sits on a branch in an air temperature around minus 4 Fahrenheit in central Kiev, on Feb. 3. Thirty-eight more deaths from a cold snap have been registered in Ukraine in the past 24 hours, bringing to 101 the toll from freezing temperatures across the former Soviet republic, the Emergencies Ministry said on Friday.

    AP reports:

In Ukraine, thirty-eight more fatalities were reported from frostbite and hypothermia on Friday, raising the nation's death toll to 101. Emergency officials have said many of the victims were homeless.

Mykola Blyznyuk of the Health Ministry told the Kiev Post newspaper that many of the victims of hypothermia had broken their legs in falls and spent a long time on the ground in freezing temperatures while waiting for help to arrive.

Of the Ukrainians who have died since the cold weather hit Jan. 27, 64 were found frozen on the streets, 11 died in hospitals and 26 in their homes, emergency officials said.

It was so cold there, that some 1,500 swans, sea gulls and ducks froze to the ice in a small harbor near Ukraine's Black Sea port of Odessa, forcing emergency workers to use ships to break up the surface and free the birds, officials said.

The weeklong cold snap — Eastern Europe's worst in decades — is causing power outages, frozen water pipes and the widespread closure of schools, nurseries, airports and bus routes.

    AP reports:

Thick snowflakes fell in Rome on Friday, a rare occurrence for a capital usually blessed by a temperate climate, and other parts of the country experienced frigid temperatures unseen in years.

The snowfall prompted authorities to stop visitors from entering the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill, the former home of Rome's ancient emperors.

The last substantial snowfalls in Rome were in 1985 and 1986, though there have been other cases of lighter snow since then, including in 2010.
