A group of Russian citizens ride a bus shortly after crossing the border from Syria into Lebanon at the Masna'a border crossing in Lebanon, on Jan. 22. Some 80 Russian citizens crossed into Lebanon as Moscow began evacuating some of the tens of thousands of Russians who live in Syria.

By Bassem Mroue and Vladimir Isachenkov, The Associated Press

Four buses carrying Russian citizens escaping the Syrian civil war crossed into Lebanon on Tuesday, in the first evacuation organized by Moscow since the start of the conflict nearly two years ago.

About 80 people, mostly women and children, were on the buses, according to an official from the Russian Embassy in Beirut who was waiting for the group at the Masnaa border crossing in eastern Lebanon. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

The evacuation was the strongest sign yet of Russia's doubts in the ability of President Bashar Assad's regime to cling to power in Syria.

Mandatory evacuation ordered as blaze threatens Los Alamos

Jane Phillips / The New Mexican via AP

Carissa Pittman consoles her daughter, Emily, 15, while her husband, Pete, in the car and son, Allen, 21, prepare to leave Los Alamos, N.M., because of the wildfire on June 27. Thousands of residents calmly fled Monday from the mesa-top town that's home to the Los Alamos nuclear laboratory, ahead of an approaching wildfire.

    Craig Fritz / Reuters

Flames from the Las Conchas fire burn in the hills above Los Alamos National Laboratory on June 27. The fast-moving wildfire raged on Monday near the edge of the nation's preeminent nuclear facility, Los Alamos National Laboratory, a vast complex that houses research laboratories and a plutonium facility. Authorities said there was little threat to sensitive areas of the 28,000-acre complex, where explosives are stored in underground concrete and steel bunkers.

msnbc.com news services report from LOS ALAMOS, N.M.:

Firefighters struggled early Tuesday to hold back a fierce blaze roaring out of control at the edge of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, a sprawling nuclear weapons complex that includes a plutonium facility.

Flames licked all day at the boundary of the laboratory site, home to the nation's largest supply of nuclear weapons, as fire crews scurried to douse spot fires carried onto the grounds by winds from the leading edge of the blaze.

The laboratory was shut down, and the adjacent town of Los Alamos, home to about 12,000 people, was placed under a mandatory evacuation earlier. Continue reading.

Migrants reach the safety of Benghazi after terrifying escape from Misrata

Reuters reports: A ship carrying 1,138 people evacuated from the besieged Libyan city of Misrata, including dozens of wounded, arrived in rebel-held Benghazi early on Thursday, the International Organization for Migration said.

The Red Star One defied deadly shell fire to rescue African and Asian migrant workers from Misrata port on Wednesday, but was forced to leave behind hundreds of Libyans desperate to flee the fighting. Continue reading.

A Libyan woman evacuated from Misrata is greeted by wellwishers as she gets off a ship in Benghazi on May 5.

The terrifying scenes in Misrata, which we reported on PhotoBlog yesterday, were captured in this report from Britain's Channel 4 News:

Moammar Gadhafi's forces are targeting civilians trying to flee Misrata, bombarding the port city, while a humanitarian rescue ship sits off shore waiting for the shelling to stop. Channel 4's Alex Thomson reports.

Evacuation of foreign nationals from Japan

By David R Arnott, NBC News

The U.S. authorized the first evacuations of Americans out of Japan and warned U.S. citizens to defer all non-essential travel to any part of the country as unpredictable weather and wind conditions risked spreading radioactive contamination.

A passenger waits for an international flight at Narita international airport, east of Tokyo on March 17.

The decision to begin evacuations mirrors moves by countries such as Australia and Germany, who also advised their citizens to consider leaving Tokyo and other earthquake-affected areas. Tokyo, which is about 170 miles from the stricken nuclear complex, has reported slightly elevated radiation levels, though Japanese officials have said the increase was too small to threaten the 39 million people in and around the capital.

French citizens queue to check-in to a special charter flight to Paris, at Narita airport, east of Tokyo on March 17. The French government said on Wednesday that Japan was losing control of the situation at the Fukushima nuclear power plant and urged its nationals in Tokyo to leave the country or head to southern Japan.

"Based on scientific evidence there is absolutely no reason to leave Tokyo," Noriyuki Shikata, Japan's deputy Cabinet secretary for public relations, told NBC News on Thursday.

As many U.S. citizens try to leave Egypt, one woman joins the street protesters

A U.S. citizen holds a placard and an Egyptian flag in Tahrir Square, Cairo on Feb. 1. The Egyptian army has said it will not fire on protestors as they gather in large numbers in central Cairo demanding the resignation of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarek.

By David R Arnott, NBC News

The U.S. State Department has evacuated more than 1,200 Americans from Egypt aboard Government-chartered planes, and expects to fly out about 1,400 more in the coming days, we report today.

But at least one U.S. citizen decided to join the protesters in Tahrir Square today, where al-Jazeera correspondent Dan Nolan described the scene as 'kinda like an Egyptian version of Woodstock'.

UPDATE: Thanks to the readers of PhotoBlog, we now know that the woman in the second photo is Lisa Roscoe, who was raised in San Francisco and now lives in Cairo with her Egyptian husband. She heard that we had posted her picture and got in touch with us via the comments section below.

In an exclusive interview with msnbc.com's Ian Johnston, Roscoe explains why she joined the protests.

Not so Sweet Drew. I live here in Cairo and joined the protest to support the Egyptian people in their demand for liberty and justice.
