Fire in Philadelphia's Fabric Row claims life of firefighter

    Peter Tobia / AP

Firefighters battle the blaze that claimed the life of Capt. Michael Goodwin, April 6. The fire caused a partial roof collapse that killed Goodwin and injured a colleague who was trying to rescue him.

A veteran firefighter was killed in a Philadelphia blaze on Saturday after a three-story building collapsed underneath him.

At an emotional news conference late Saturday after the fire in the city's Fabric Row section was extinguished, Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers told reporters that the victim, 53-year-old Capt. Michael Goodwin, was his friend and "a ladder man. A firefighter's firefighter."

"He's the kind of guy who looked out for his folks — a big guy," Ayers said.

Goodwin had been with the department for 29 years.

Zack Sowders and Gage Lee, both 16, of Bowling Green, Ky., wait to be rescued on April 1, after their boat overturned in the rapids of the Barren River while they were fishing.

A Bowling Green Fire Department firefighter became trapped in Kentucky’s Barren River as he attempted to assist in the rescue of two teenage fishermen that were stranded in the rapids after their boat overturned.

The Bowling Green Daily News reported:

The strong current caused the rescue worker to be pulled across the rocky terrain, BGFD spokeswoman Marlee Boenig said. The man, whose name was not released, suffered an ankle injury during the incident.

“He was stuck and when he broke loose, I guess the current pulled him,” Boenig said. Continue reading.

Rescue workers were on the scene for about 90 minutes and managed to pull the teens to safety without further incident.

The killer murdered his own grandmother with a hammer. He should have been given the death penalty for that. Had that happened this tragedy would never have happened.

A kitten stuck in a pipe is freed by firefighters and is now resting in hopes of making a full recovery.

Kitten rescued from pipe predicament in California

A good Samaritan found a kitten, a 2-month-old male, that had somehow wedged itself into a scrap piece of drainage pipe near his business in Mira Loma, Calif., on Saturday.

The man then brought the pipe and meowing cat to the Western Riverside County / City Animal Shelter in Jurupa Valley, near Riverside, where veterinary technicians first tried to extricate the cat using lubricants. They also sedated the cat to relax him and connected him to a heart monitor.

After more than 30 minutes of trying without success to get the cat out, the team decided it was time to call the fire department for assistance.

Firefighters from CAL Fire's Station 16 used a saw and the Jaws of Life to safely rescue the kitty.

The kitten is resting, and veterinary professionals will continue to monitor his condition.

If he makes a full recovery, he would likely be available for adoption in about one week.
