In China, super flowers rise above Tiananmen Square ahead of National Congress

Workmen put the finishing touches on a giant flower pot in Tiananmen Square as the city prepares for the upcoming 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in Beijing, Sept. 22. Xi Jinping is widely expected to be named head of the ruling Communist Party and become president in the country's once-in-a-decade leadership transition.

Gorgeous flowers! It must have taken forever to make them and then to place them. I love the way Asian cultures go all out in decorating for special occasions.

Creeping beauty waits for its prey

A predatory spider waits to ambush an unsuspecting insect on a Queen Anne's lace flower growing in a field near Roseburg, Ore., on Sunday, July 29. The seeds of the plant, also known as wild carrot, were once thought to be a form of birth control. The U.S. Department of Agriculture lists Queen Anne's lace as a noxious weed.

Leaning in for a fresh whiff of Mr. Stinky

Visitors of the Botanical Gardens in Copenhagen saw nothing less than a sensation when an Amorphophallus Titanum bloomed for the first time in nine years in Denmark, on June 22. However, it might be a malodorous experience as the giant plant emits a strong odor of carcass and therefore has been nicknamed the Corpse-flower or Mr. Stinky.

Everything coming up roses in Bulgaria's Rose Valley

    Valentina Petrova / AP

The hands of a rose picker are full of roses during the rose-picking season near the village of Tarnichene, Bulgaria.

Rose oil production in Bulgaria's famous Rose Valley is set to increase by 25 percent according to a mid-season estimate by experts in spite of the climate changes and economy crisis. Bulgaria is traditionally one of the biggest world exporters of high-grade rose oil along with Morocco and neighboring Turkey, with clients mostly from the United States, France, Germany, United Kingdom and Japan. Rose oil is the most commonly used essential oil in the perfume industry.

Workers check tulip heads in a tulip field on April 27, near Schwaneberg, Germany. Spring weather is finally taking hold in Germany with temperatures expected to reach 28 degrees Celsius by the weekend. Since the tulips will be sold for their bulbs rather than their flowers, the workers need to check that the machine that bends the tulip heads over (a process that makes for better bulbs) was successful.

    Picking fresh daffodils in Cornwall

Daffodils that have been left to flower at Fentongollan Farm on Wednesday near Truro, England. Despite the gloomy economic outlook, some retailers are reporting a surge in demand for daffodils, which have been traditionally grown in Cornwall as it is one of the mildest counties in the UK. Many of the cut-flower businesses still in existence today were established in the Victorian era when the new railway transport network put once remote locations in touch with the London markets.
