Organizers of Bahrain's Grand Prix said Thursday that sporadic protests against the race and violent unrest across the Gulf nation do not pose a threat to the premier international event in the kingdom.

Anti-government groups have stepped up protests against the race in attempts to embarrass authorities, but the demonstrations have been mostly isolated to areas that are hotbeds of opposition to the ruling royal family. Rights groups also are using the race to criticize Bahrain's arrests and other security crackdowns.

Bahrain has faced more than two years of violence between the Sunni-led government and majority Shiites seeking a greater political voice.

French Formula One driver Romain Grosjean, center, of Lotus and Spanish driver Fernando Alonso, right, of Ferrari crash during the start of the 2012 Belgium Formula One Grand Prix.

The early crash also took out Mexican driver Sergio Perez and Grosjean, who received a one-race ban for dangerous driving and will miss the Sept. 9 stop in Monza, Italy.

Grosjean went for a small gap and clipped Lewis Hamilton's McLaren. That sent both cars spinning and led to Grosjean's Lotus flying over Alonso's Ferrari, which then took out Perez's Sauber. All four drivers escaped injury.

A visibly frustrated Hamilton briefly confronted Grosjean after the incident and tapped the side of his own helmet with his finger after getting out of his car.

The race was only seconds old when a crash took out four drivers, including Romain Grosjean, one of the pre-race favorites.

Schumacher appeared to nudge his Mercedes into Grosjean as they jostled for position, sending Grosjean's Lotus spinning sideways.

Pastor Malonado's Williams ran into Pedro de la Rosa's HRT and both went out, while Schumacher continued. Japanese driver Kamui Kobayashi, whose Sauber was also damaged, failed to restart after making a pit stop.

Williams team nabs first Formula One victory in eight years, celebration cut short by garage fire

Racing team crews try to extinguish a fire in the Williams racing pit stand at the Circuit de Catalunya on May 13 in Montmelo, Spain, after the Spanish Formula One Grand Prix.

Pastor Maldonado held off Fernando Alonso to win the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday and give Williams its first Formula One victory in eight years.
    ...

"It's a wonderful day for me and the team. An unforgettable race," said Maldonado, who was hoisted onto the shoulders of Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen before being doused in champagne on his first visit to the podium. "It was a tough race, with the strategy and a couple of laps we were struggling. But the car was so competitive from the first lap."

Maldonado's victory provided icing on the cake for Frank Williams as the team celebrated its longtime team principal's 70th birthday this weekend. Williams' celebration speech, however, was cut short after a fire broke out in the team's garage after the race. No injuries were reported.

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone answers questions in the paddock from the media regarding the forthcoming Bahrain Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit on April 12, 2012 in Shanghai, China.

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone says Bahrain Grand Prix is on

Reuters reports — Next week's Bahrain Grand Prix will go ahead unless local officials decide otherwise, Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone said on Thursday.

"The race is on the calendar, it's scheduled. The only people that can do anything about it is the national sporting authority in the country that can ask for it to be withdrawn from the calendar," he told Reuters at the Chinese Grand Prix.

"Unless it gets withdrawn by the national sporting authority in the country, then we'll be there."

Local organizers, who had to cancel last year's race at Sakhir due to civil unrest, have been adamant that this year's event is safe to go ahead despite continuing sectarian divisions and street violence in the kingdom as well as threats targeting the grand prix. Read the full story.
