Rain delayed their final match until today, but another brief shower didn't stop Rafael Nadal in his quest to win his seventh French Open by beating Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5, to take the trophy. The win breaks the record he shared with Bjorn Borg and puts him one win away from breaking Chris Evert's record which she's held since 1986. Nadal was clearly thrilled to take the title, climbing up into the stands and hugging his supporters and family, sharing the moment with them before returning to the court to hoist the trophy over his head for the cameras.  Full story.

Maria Sharapova wins at the French Open

Maria Sharapova of Russia celebrates after winning her women's singles final match against Sara Errani of Italy at the French Open tennis tournament at the Roland Garros stadium in Paris June 9, 2012.

Maria worked hard and deserves this. Just one wrinkle: Why does she play for Russia? She was born in Belarus, moved to the US at age 7 to take advantage of the training and that's not all I bet. This is tacky and a joke.

Case of European racism emerged clearly when a large number of the audience left the stands in the stadium at the moment of delivery of the Cup tournament to the Chinese women champ - we have not seen this behavior before when the heroine was European or U.S.

Federer stops Djokovic's win streak at 43

It's great to see some real sportsmanship these days. I was looking for the great celebration shot, like the one of Nadal earlier today, but I think Federer was too tired to show much emotion. As AP reported:

On Sunday, Nadal will try to beat Federer for the sixth time in eight Grand Slam finals.

"Beating Novak today was maybe a good birthday gift for him because he lost his four previous matches against Novak," Federer said of Nadal, who turned 25 on Friday. "I'm going to play against Nadal, my main rival, in another Grand Slam final. We live for these moments."

Defending champ Nadal rolls past Murray into French final

    AP reports:

PARIS - Rafael Nadal is still the "King of Clay" at the French Open, and he will be for at least another couple of days after beating Andy Murray 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 Friday to reach his sixth final in seven years at Roland Garros.

The top-ranked Spaniard wasn't perfect against Murray, struggling at times with his serve and getting broken three times, but his play was consistent enough to take care of his opponent's defensive tactics.

"The conditions today were not easy," said Nadal, who saved all six break points he faced in the third set. "Very, very difficult with the wind changing a lot." Continue reading.

Clay day. I once read a sports story about tennis in which the author described how when he went to his hotel during an opens match the players were easy to discern, because they were the ones with one arm that was huge, like a crabs large claw. Tennis anyone?
