Storks losing their wetland homes end up at local garbage dump in India

    EPA

An Indian woman rag picker searches for material as a group of Greater Adjutant Stork seen in the background at a rubbish dump near Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary on the outskirts of Guwahati city, India, on May 10.

Fast vanishing wetlands in and around Guwahati city have now become a major threat for the survival of the Greater Adjutant Stork. Guwahati city has the largest concentration of the stork in the world but their numbers are gradually declining due to the loss of wetlands, habitat and declining availability of food.

In Nov. 2011, China Central Television wrote about India's efforts to save the endangered birds. Biologists helped educate the communities sharing land with the birds' habitats about the importance of the species to the environment.

Filipinos return to a landslide area damaged Saturday by heavy rains and a collapsed wall of a garbage dumpsite in Baguio, Philippines, on Aug. 28. Typhoon Nanmadol dumped heavy rains in northern and eastern Philippines on Saturday, triggering landslides and floods that left at least seven people dead. The Office of Civil Defence said five children ranging from 4 to 13 years old were crushed in landslides in the northern province of Pangasinan and the mountain resort city of Baguio, while six more people are missing.

Landslide filled with garbage buries homes in Philippines

While homes were buried by garbage in Baguio, AP reports on other incidents around the country:

In northern Benguet province, bus driver Reynaldo Carlos ordered his passengers to flee Saturday after seeing mud, debris and boulders surging down a mountainside toward the vehicle, which was stuck on a muddy road.

The bus, its engine still running, was swept down a 200-foot (60-meter) ravine after everyone escaped, officials said.

"I was trembling with fear after I realized how close we were to death," Carlos told The Associated Press by telephone.

Two men wearing white disposable overalls and masks on their mouths take stinking garbage from the alleys of the Spanish Quarter of Naples, to throw it along via Toledo in the city center, near the intersection with via Santa Brigida, a few hundred meters from Piazza del Plebiscite, in Naples, Italy, June 21. Protests broke out in the city over the uncollected waste with citizens blocking a street by overturning dumpsters, strewing the contents across the street.

Protests break out in Naples over uncollected trash

    By Rich Shulman

What is it about Naples and its inability to collect its trash? The problem is nothing new, dating back to 2008.

Last year, the European Union threatened to levy fines on Italy if the mess wasn't cleaned up.

Piles of uncollected rubbish in Pozzuoli, a suburb of Naples, on Monday, May 9. Italian soldiers arrived Monday in Naples to start clearing rubbish in a city infested with some 4,100 tons of waste now emitting a putrid odor following a seasonal rise in temperatures.

Italian soldiers take part in efforts to remove trash piling up along the shore of Monteruscello on Monday.

    EPA reports:

According to media reports, around 170 soldiers have been deployed in Naples, using over 70 trucks to help move the rubbish. Up to 2,000 tons of waste has been left on the streets. This is the second time since 2008 that the Italian army has been called into the southern Italian city to clear away the garbage.

Massive Mardi Gras mop-up in New Orleans

Mardi Gras reveler Mike Turpin, whose night still isn't over, reacts as a front loader collects beads and other debris left behind by revelers on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans, early Wednesday, March 9. A mother carries her child through uncollected garbage on their way back from school in the historic Spanish district of Naples on November 22, 2010. As piles of malodorous garbage continued to accumulate in the streets of Naples, the total amount of uncollected waste in the city was likely to reach 3,600 tons by the end of the day, the Italian press said.

Trash still piling up in Naples

A woman covers her face as she passes rubbish piled up in the central street on November 19, 2010 in Naples, Italy. Around 2,000 tons of rubbish have accumulated in various parts of the city over the past two weeks, resulting in violent confrontations between police and the residents of Terzigno, near Naples, who are demanding the closure of one open-air dump and have rejected a plan to open a second.

The Italian government pledged 150 million euros ($ 209.6 million) on Thursday to help solve a chronic garbage crisis in and around Naples and said it would speed up the construction of incinerators in the region.

The Naples garbage crisis is a symptom of weak environmental regulation in Italy. A lot of the waste, including hazardous waste from the north of Italy gets dumped in the south. Italy is a small country. It's not that Italians are incapable of dropping their trash off at the dump, the dumps are over …

Riot police take cover after being attacked by protestors in Terzigno, Italy, on Oct. 23. The protesters were demonstrating against the opening of a new dump on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius.

    No dumping

Apparently there is an existing dump which people oppose the use of on Mount Vesuvius, and there is a plan to open a new one, which is drawing the locals' ire as well. To make matters worse, the protests are happening at the same time as a strike by garbage collectors, which has resulted in tons of trash piling up and stinking up the streets of Terzigno.
