In a haze of exhaust fumes, Russian self-propelled howitzers move across Red Square on May 9, 2013.

Fighter jets screamed over Red Square and heavy tanks rumbled over its cobblestones as Russia flexed its military muscle on the 68th anniversary of its costly victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the annual military parade in Moscow that Russia will be a guarantor of world security. Putin's short speech Thursday came at the culmination of Victory Day, Russia's most important secular holiday, which honors the country's huge military and civilian losses.

Commemorative events were also held in other former Soviet states and in Jerusalem.

    By Margarita Antidze, Reuters

Hundreds of protesters who accuse Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili of flouting human rights and stifling dissent forced him to change the venue of his annual address to the nation on Friday.

Political tensions have engulfed Georgia since Saakashvili's party lost parliamentary elections in October to a group led by billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili. Now prime minister, Ivanishvili is experiencing a difficult cohabitation with the president.

Scuffles broke out as protesters barred officials from Saakashvili's party entering Georgia's National Library, the venue for the speech that was due later in the day. Continue reading.

Georgia remembers 'Day of 100,000 Martyrs'

Georgian Orthodox believers take part in a service in downtown Tbilisi, Georgia, Nov. 13, 2012. Every year people gather to attend a special service devoted to the memory of Georgian Christians who suffered and died for their beliefs.

Agence France Presse reports — A headteacher in the Georgian city of Rustavi has found an unusual way to get children's early education off the ground -- by transforming an airplane into a kindergarten.

Gari Chapidze bought the old but fully functional Yakovlev Yak-42 from Georgian Airways and refurbished its interior with educational equipment, games and toys but left the cockpit instruments intact so they could be used as play tools.

"The idea was to create a kindergarten where children go with joy," Chapidze said. Read the full story.

Land art representing "Dueling Banjos," a reference to the movie "Deliverance", stands at the entrance to the Chattooga River Festival in Long Creek, S.C. on June 22, 2012. Communities along the Chattooga River are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the movie's release with the first-ever Chattooga River Festival. Some locals are unhappy with reminding the world to the area's connection to the movie.
