Escape by a hare: A greyhound’s hot pursuit

The first day of the Co. Limerick Coursing Club J.P. McManus Irish Cup, an annual meeting where greyhounds course hares with a €80 first prize at stake on Limerick Racecourse at Greenmount, Patrickswell, on Feb. 22, in Limerick, Ireland.

While I am certainly happy that these athletic greyhounds are muzzled up, it does strike me as somewhat vicious to make a poor hare run for its life while its pursuers are taunted with a feast that they will never get. The hare ends up terrified and the greyhounds hungry.  That said, the animals don’t get hurt and it looks like they are having a good time getting the exercise.

Seriously! A picture of a terrified rabbit being run to death for "sport?" They use mechanical "rabbits" on the tracks; if this was some sort of training exercise, why can't they also use a mechanical rabbit for that? Greyhound bus overturns in Pa., injuring 2 dozen

Dan Marschka / Lancaster Newspapers via AP

Emergency personnel work the scene where a Greyhound bus bound for St. Louis from New York City flipped on its side on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, briefly trapping a woman and injuring about two dozen people about one mile east of the Lancaster-Lebanon interchange, early Aug. 13, near Manheim, Pa.

     AP reports:

The westbound bus had stopped in Philadelphia and was headed for a stop in Columbus, Ohio, when it overturned about 6 a.m. Twenty-nine people, including the driver, were aboard, said Greyhound spokesman Maureen Richmond.

Both westbound lanes of the turnpike were closed until about 10:20, forcing drivers to be rerouted off the interstate. Traffic was backed up for about three miles by the time vehicles were allowed to pass through on the shoulder of the highway around 8:30 a.m., while crews worked to upright the bus, DeFebo said.

A man working in a farm shop nearby heard the accident on the turnpike, his father told the Lancaster Sunday News.

"It wasn't a bang, just a slide," said the father, Walter Zeiset.
