Heat beats Spurs in OT, 103-100, to force Game 7

    Eric Gay / AP

R.J. Cardenas runs past a screen displaying a broadcast of Game 6 of the NBA Finals basketball series between the San Antonio Spurs and the Miami Heat, June 18, in San Antonio, Texas.

By Kurt Helin, ProBasketBallTalk on nbcsports.com

    That was a great game.

And Game 7 sets up to be something special.

For three quarters San Antonio’s execution was too much for Miami and the Spurs entered the fourth up 10 (75-65) and just 12 minutes away from a title. Tim Duncan had been a force, with countermoves spinning Chris Bosh around and Duncan had 30 points (and he finished with 17 boards on a monster night).

But the fourth quarter belonged to LeBron James — he had 16 points in the quarter, cranked up his defensive pressure, his teammates followed along and they forced overtime thanks to an amazing Ray Allen three pointer with 5 seconds left. Read the full story.

Ice sales soar as heat continues on East Coast

    Mario Tama / Getty Images

Ricky Perez unloads 300-pound blocks of ice from a brine tank to be sold at Arctic Glacier Premium Ice on July 17, 2012 in the Bronx borough of New York City.

Very hot temperatures are expected to extend from eastern Montana to the central and southern Plains and eastward to the Mid-Atlantic Wednesday, The Weather Channel reports, with highs of 95 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit. A few areas of Kansas could approach 110 degrees.

The ongoing heat wave means business is booming for companies selling ice, Getty Images reports.

"Right now we are selling these things like crazy," said Ricky Perez, an employee of Arctic Glacier Premium Ice in the Bronx. The blocks take three days to freeze in the tank and sell for $75.

Yeah...it's just one meaningless heatwave. That is unless you count the record smashing one two weeks ago...or the obscene crazy warm March...or our last winter that never happened...or the second hottest summer in US History that just occurred in 2011. The deniers have made it …

Patrick Kirwin holds his daughter Nandini beneath a water mister at the National Zoo as temperatures surpass the 95 degree Fahrenheit (35 degrees Celcius) mark for the tenth straight day in Washington D.C., July 7. The massive heat wave, which has broken thousands of temperature records in the mid-Atlantic states, is expected to crest today with temperatures in DC reaching 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

Miguel Llanos, msnbc.com reports: The heat wave shifting east comes after last weekend's storms that left millions without power. Hundreds of thousands still don't have electricity back.

Moreover, since the first round of extreme heat two weeks ago, at least 46 deaths have been tied to the high temperatures, according to a list compiled by the Weather Channel.

On Saturday, Washington, D.C., could break it's all-time record of 106 degrees, the Weather Channel reported. So could Pittsburgh (103) and Louisville, Ky., (107), it added. Full story.

1.5 million bats left hungrier by historic Texas drought

    Charlie L. Harper / Reuters

Spectators gather by the water near the Congress Street bridge in downtown Austin, Texas, on Tuesday, July 27, to watch the bats make their nightly flight for food. The largest urban bat colony in the world lives below a bridge in Austin. The drought has killed off crops in Texas, and that in turn has killed off those delicious pests the Mexican free-tailed bats consider dinner.

    Charlie L. Harper / Reuters

Each night the bats stream from under a bridge by the hundreds of thousands in a black cloud so large that it shows up on local weather radar.

    Charlie L. Harper / Reuters

One of some 1.5 million bats emerges from below the Congress Street Bridge near downtown Austin on Wednesday.

     Reuters reports:

AUSTIN, Texas — There are 1.5 million bats living under a bridge in downtown Austin, and a historic Texas drought is making them hungrier than ever.

That's bad news for the bats in the world's largest urban bat colony. But it is good news for the humans who gather each evening just a few blocks from the state Capitol building to watch their spectacular nightly trips into the nearby Hill Country to find food. Continue reading.

Civil War re-enactors brave the heat in Virginia

    Michael Reynolds / EPA

A re-enactor portraying a Confederate soldier, center, drinks water from a flask to stay cool during the heat, before the reenactment of the First Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) in Manassas, Va., July 23. The reenactment, with over 8,000 re-enactors, is part of the 150th Anniversary Commemoration of the first major land battle in the American Civil War, which took place in Manassas, July 21, 1861. The original battle happened when about 35,000 Union troops marched from Washington and clashed with a Confederate force of 20,000, which resulted in a Confederate victory. Re-enactors had to endure a brutal heat wave with some wearing wool uniforms, as temperatures were expected to reach 102 Fahrenheit.
