Hisham Assem was convicted of killing the Frenchman in an Oct. 6 attack on an oil firm compound.

A judge in Yemen sentenced to death a man convicted of shooting and killing a French engineer, and also sentenced in absentia the radical U.S.-born preacher Anwar al-Awlaki to 10 years in prison for aiding the gunman. Assem, a 22 year-old Yemeni, opened fire in October at a compound of the Austrian-owned oil and gas firm OMV, killing the Frenchman.
