Americans light up their front yards in Christmas glory

    Richard Vogel / AP

Adriana Leiss and her daughters Gabriella and Amelia replace burned out light bulbs on their 1965 Chevy pick-up truck decorated for Christmas at their house, on what is known as "Candy Cane Lane" in the Woodland Hills section of Los Angeles.

Whether it's a '65 Chevy pickup festooned with stars and colored lights on "Candy Cane Lane" in Los Angeles or the row houses on 34th Street in Baltimore, festively transformed into the "Miracle on 34th Street," Americans go all-out decorating their houses and front yards for the Christmas holiday.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Photos for this blog post were shot by Associated Press photographers throughout December, and made available to NBC News today.

The "Ditto" photo made my day! I live in a subdivision that could be re-named Grinchland because it is so dark. It made me glad to see that some people still have the "joy of life."

I like it. I especially like the purple. It's warm and cool. The blue one looks like it could have been painted that way on a permanent basis and pleasant to view on any day.

People all around the world participate in the tradition of decorating their homes, public parks, and streets with holiday lights for the season. Some are more ambitious than others. A guy in Jersey has taken his display on the road by decorating his truck with almost 2,000 lights and a Christmas tree (see for yourself in the video below). The poor economy has caused many to downscale their displays. One creative city in Brazil, made Christmas lights from recycled plastic drinking bottles as a joint project between the city and local garbage recyclers. (Image #5 in our Holiday Lights slideshow).

In this photo made using a long exposure and zooming the lens, hundreds of lights illuminate the home of Norm and Michele Rados in Olmsted Township, Ohio on Dec. 23. Rados said it takes four to five weekends of work to finish his annual holiday display leading up to the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
